Duncan Hallas, born 1925, was a prominent member of the Trotskyist movement in Britain.
This reached such a point that Hallas initiated an oppositional grouping to Cliff's course in the IS alongside John Palmer and Jim Higgins.
Hallas would continue to be a member of the leadership of the IS and then of the Socialist Workers Party, its organisational successor founded in 1977, until his retirement from active politics in the late 1990s.

Duncan was one of a handful of members of the British section of the Fourth International who supported Cliff when he first developed the theory of state capitalism in 1947-48, and he helped to form the Socialist Review Group at the very beginnings of the International Socialist Tendency in 1951.
Duncan, appearing from the blue, carrying all the authority of an experienced Trotskyist and displaying the most remarkable debating skills, played a key role in winning the organisation to the recognition that authentic Leninism was the antithesis of Stalinism.

Duncan Hallas, long time revolutionary socialist, passed away in London, England September 19 at the age of 77.
With the war over, Hallas was a key supporter in Britain of Tony Cliff, when Cliff developed his crucial theory of state capitalism.
Hallas explained clearly the need to both build open revolutionary parties, and to also work in united fronts with large numbers of working people regardless of their politics.

Duncan Hallas, Jim Higgins and Roger Protz, the editor of Socialist Worker, resisted this ultra-left turn and the latter two were sacked from the paper, while Hallas recanted.
Jim and the International Socialist Opposition continued to defend the independence of the rank and file movement and an orientation towards building in the unions.
