Duncan McArthur (January 14, 1772 – April 29, 1839) was a Federalist and National Republican politician from Ohio.
McArthur moved across the Ohio River in 1797 to the new town of Chillicothe, Ohio, which was to become the state capital in 1803.
McArthur served intermittently thereafter in the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio State Senate, as well as a single term from 1823-1825 in the United States House of Representatives before winning election to the governorship in 1830.

After the death of Duncan's mother when he was three, his father remarried and, in 1780, moved his family to western Pennsylvania.
For the next two years McArthur was employed by the state of Kentucky as an Indian ranger to patrol the Ohio River.
McArthur's first important public office was that of representative from Ross County in the Ohio General Assembly, to which he was elected in the fall of 1804.

McArthur arrived at the Manitoba Capital that morning from Battle Creek, Mich., where he had been undergoing special treatment for acute anaemia but his condition was so serious that he could not be removed to a hospital.
McArthur was the head of the general contracting firm of J. McArthur company, had large lumber and milling properties in Birtle, Man., Moyle, British Columbia, and Lac du Bonnet, Man., and had extensive real estate connections and properties in Winnipeg and vicinity, including timber interests on the Winnipeg river.
McArthur was very active in his efforts to secure a pulp and paper mill in the Winnipeg district, and finally succeeding in organizing the Manitoba Pulp and Paper company, and in interesting the Spanish River paper mill interests in it.

John Duncan McArthur was representative of entrepreneurs from Ontario, who, seeking new economic opportunities, immigrated to Manitoba in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
Among other railways for which McArthur served as a contractor were the Grand Trunk Pacific (the section between Winnipeg and Lake Superior), the Canadian Northern (the section between Portage la Prairie and Edmonton), the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia, the Alberta and Great Waterways, and the Hudson Bay (HBR).
McArthur was aware of the commercial possibilities of the "New Manitoba" in the northern part of the province after Manitoba's boundaries were expanded in 1912.

Duncan McArthur Hall was built between 1969 and 1971 and funded by the Ontario government.
Duncan McArthur graduated from Queen's in 1908 with a Master's Degree, and won medals in history, philosophy and political science.
McArthur wanted to completely redefine education in Ontario, and did research on schools in Britain and Scandinavia to determine what needed to be done.

A plaque honouring educator Duncan McArthur will be unveiled Thursday, Jan. 18 at 2 pm in the main foyer of Duncan McArthur Hall as part of a celebration marking 100 years since the initial founding of the Faculty of Education in 1907.
McArthur, historian, lawyer, and policy maker, held many positions at Queen's throughout his career and was Deputy Minister (1934-1940) and Minister (1940-1943) of Education for Ontario.
McArthur also published a textbook for high school students on Canadian history and contributed to the Cambridge History of the British Empire.

McArthur led his Ohio volunteers up to Detroit as part of General William Hull’s Army of the Northwest.
Paroled back to Ohio, McArthur continued to recruit soldiers for the war effort and eventually took over command of the Northwest army, when William Henry Harrison resigned.

McArthur, a pioneer who surveyed this territory in 1796, decided that the beautiful sloping land on the west side of Paint Creek would make an excellent location for a "Greene Countrie Towne." McArthur donated a square for a courthouse and jail, and also a lot for a burying ground.
McArthur rose to prominence and eventually became governor of Ohio and a member of Congress.
By 1846 the town had a population of nearly 2,000, and an effort was made to create a new "McArthur County" from portions of Highland, Fayette and Ross Counties, with Greenfield in the center as county seat.

A pair of circa 1815 flintlock pistols, considered to be among the finest pistols made in America during the period and probably a product of Simon Lauck’s (1762-1815)workshop in Winchester, Va., now are on loan to Colonial Williamsburg and are on display in the Masterworks Gallery of the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum.
The pistols are believed to have been a gift from William Henry Harrison, who later became president of the United States, to his close friend General Duncan McArthur (1772-1839).
McArthur served as governor of Ohio from 1830 to 1832.
