Dundaga is a large rural community in Talsu county, Latvia.
Dundaga is famous for its castle, the construction of which was started in 1249 by the crusaders of Livonian Order from Riga.
From the 16th until the 20th century, Dundagas Castle was the centre of the large private estate of Kurzeme (Courland).

That building was a summer dwelling for a baron of Dundaga - K. Osten Zaken.

All my relatives died, but I survived the concentration camps in Riga and Dundaga.
I escaped from there and used to hid in the forests of Kurland from summer of 1944 till May 9th, 1945.

 Holocaust Revealed
In the middle of 1943 Dundaga became the main place of employment of Jews.
The SS decided to establish Sea camp (Seelager Dondogen) and for this reason they ordered Latvians to free three villages - Dundaga, Arlava and Lubezere.
According to A. Vestermann, in the Summer of 1943 about 5000 Jews were transported from Riga to Dundaga I. In November 1943 in the village of Lubezere another camp was established - Dundaga II, where at the beginning there were 155 Jews, in February of 1944 - 450 and in June - 1000 people.

Margers Vestermanis, born in Riga in 1925, endured the horrors of the Holocaust until the summer of 1944, when he managed to escape from the Dundaga concentration camp and join a group of partisans in the forests of Northern Courland.
After the war he studied history in Riga and became an archivist in the State Historical Archives.

I with my brother Emilian were relocated to Barrack 21 known also as the "Kinder Block" (the Children Block).
My elderly sister Eva, age 19, stayed only a few weeks at Birkenau, at the Women Detention Center "C." After that, she followed her ordeal through the concentration camps of Kaiserwald, Dundaga, Stutthof, and Malchow from where she was liberated by the Soviet Army.
At the end of September 1944, I and my brother Emilian were sent from Birkenau's Camp "E" to K. Landsberg Camp (Kaufering - 4 and 5), part of the Dachau complex.
