Dundas was a popular area for Hamilton workers to live due to the beauty of the escarpment, the wonderful worker's cottages that were erected, and because of the omnibus system - first horse drawn, then steam, that connected Dundas with Hamilton.
The worker's cottages along Hatt Street are still in great shape, and the western end of the town around Hatt Street maintains the distinctive industrial/residential feeling that distinguishes Dundas form other small towns of the time.
Dundas is very fortunate to have many home owners who see themselves as guardians of the house as much as owners.

This street and eventually the town itself, can be assumed that they were named after the Honourable Henry Dundas (Secretary of State for Home Affairs in 1793) who was a close friend of Simcoe at the time.
The grist mill of Dundas quickly attracted the attention of the farmers from the surrounding area as the closest mill, which lead to the building of taverns and other such local businesses.
Dundas was founded in 1801, as a growing town that was beginning to make it's mark.

The hypotenuse features a raised cement structure, on eleven cement pillars, that beautifully mimics the raw industrial aesthetic of of the Gardiner Expressway, using the same kind of cement pillars that are used to support automotive overpasses.
A sculptural hypotenuse canopy extends from the intersection of Yonge Street and Dundas Street, and runs at an angle closer to Dundas than Yonge.
Washrooms/changerooms, downstairs in level P1 (part of the 250-space underground parking), are accessed from the Dundas Street side of the hypotenuse.

For many reasons Dundas Street East continues to be unhealthy and a continuous uphill battle.
The only development that Dundas Street East consistently attracts of late is low end housing and social services.

In 1974, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce located immediately to the east was planning a major expansion project, one that would have been perilous to the medical office.
Bates moved his practice to another King Street location and chose to donate the historic Doctor's Office to the Dundas Museum.
In July of 1976 the Doctor's Office became the first property in Dundas to be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The Dundas Street East burying ground was consecrated on March 3, 1828 as one of Belleville's first cemeteries.

 The Hamilton & Dundas Street Railway (H&D)
On March 17, 1873, a group of prominent local businessmen held a meeting at the Half-way House, a tavern situated between Hamilton and Dundas, (near where McMaster University is today) and decided to solve these problems by creating a railway connecting the two communities.
However, the town of Dundas refused, offering to only give permission to electrify if the railway were to build an extension to the western end of Dundas.
The town of Dundas relented, and the shareholders approved electrification in July of 1896, even though the order for the steam dummy was not cancelled (it was delivered in December).

It was soon extended to Niagara Street (1876) and Strachan Avenue (1879) and then south on Strachan to Wellington during the Exhibition season (1879).
The merchants' concerns over their business are understandible, but nothing short of a total disaster is going to keep the people away from King Street, and it is the streetcars, not the automobiles, which move the people along this street the best.
The King and Dundas cars are in danger of outgrowing the loops at Dundas West and Broadview Stations, as this shot of the Broadview loading platform illustrates.

The first street railway to be incorporated on November 12, 1890 under the Ontario Street Railway Act was the Weston, High Park and Toronto Street Railway Company, Limited which was intended to be a horse car operation in Toronto, West Toronto Junction, and York and Etobicoke Townships.
This extension was sold on December 23, 1893 to the TRC which extended its Dundas route over it to a wye in the intersection of Dundas and Keele.
The franchise was renewed with the requirement that the line had to be extended 1000 feet north from Church Street to the post office (next to the Plank Road office which still exists to this day!) just south of the GTR instead of the north limits, which was done.
