  Dundrum Castle, County Down
One of Ulster's most evocative medieval ruins, Dundrum Castle was founded by the legendary Norman adventurer John de Courcy following his invasion of Ulster in 1177.
The stone curtain wall of the outer bailey is likely to have been built by the Maginnis family, who seized Dundrum in the late fourteenth century and held it intermittently until finally expelled by Lord Mountjoy in 1601.
The Maginnis family retrieved Dundrum in 1642, but later lost it to the Parliamentarians, who dismantled the castle in 1652 after they withdrew their garrison.

In 1730, the Maude family built Dundrum House and it was situated in the midst of a fine demesne comprising of 2,400 statute acres of which nearly 800 acres were planted.
The tradition goes on to say that an officer named Maude was employed to see the execution carried out and when he saw O'Dwyer's daughter weeping at the foot of the tree for her father's death, he fell in love with her, obtained a grant of her father's land and married her.
In 1909-10, when Dundrum House and demesne were put on the market, the family of the remaining O'Dwyer clan were approached by the Land Commission as to purchasing in view of their hereditary connections.
