 What's So Great About Dune?
Dune would still have been a viable, albeit less memorable, novel if Herbert had focused on the politics of the vast, interplanetary Imperium to the exclusion of the everyday life of his desert planet.
Dune is filled with the history, laws and customs of the Imperium, each new bit of information contributing a brush-stroke of nuance to Herbert's sprawling canvas where perspective ranges in dizzying variety from the microcosmic world of flukes and water droplets to the cosmic pageantry of galactic history.

The Dune 2000 Fremen require the Atreides Palace to be built before becoming accesible to the player.
Their most notable trait is the ability to remain invisible to all enemy units unless in very close proximity.

On the other hand, even the original Dune's speech sounded with a PC speaker (read: off), especially in the intro, where the only way to hear the beautiful intro music was to switch to PC speaker mode.

If the game is a little more easygoing, with no set amount of time, a GM would still obviously need to keep things from getting TOO out of hand.
That doesn't mean I won't make a few snide remarks in the game thread, for example, making fun of their spelling, or keeping a tally of a player's personal life points while keeping track of one of their pet peeves.
The most important part of the game from a GM standpoint, is to have an interesting game.

Dune is much the better of the two.
The human environment of Dune is rather closely related to that of a medieval fantasy, with a feudal system involving Barons, Dukes, and the Emperor who bestows entire planets as fiefs on his followers.
On the other hand Dune is the more daring work in its vision of a whole new planetary ecology: the desert, the spice (essential to space travel), the sandworms, and the adaptations made by the people living there to their environment, while Middle Earth is rarely far from pastoral England or chivalric Europe.
