		Dune spawned five sequels written by Herbert, and inspired a film adaptation by David Lynch, two mini-series made by the United States-based Sci-Fi Channel, computer games, and a series of prequels co-written by Brian Herbert, the author's son, and Kevin J. Anderson.
		Dune is set far in the future amidst a sprawling feudal intergalactic empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble Houses that owe allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino.
		The historical basis of this film lies in the story of the Sudanese supposed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad, an Islamic messianic figure that rose to power in the late 19th century.

		In the first half-hour, the film tries to pack in a maximum amount of information, starting the film with a character talking straight at the camera, bringing you up to speed - proof that there'll be some problems with the narrative.
		The film, despite these huge problems, still retains an intrinsic value thanks to Lynch infusing some of his trademark dream/hallucinatory sequences and avant-garde film techniques with the team's visual flair for the unusual and the anachronistic.
		Dune needed to be re-released and the current 2 DVD set manages to put together some pretty good extras and the best image Dune has been given this side of the pond.

		Dune became popular and so did Grandpa thanks to what was actually in the book (Is that a Maker on the cover, or are you just happy to see me?).

		Dune is one film that requires multiple viewings for the casual film viewer, but I doubt a casual film viewer would be picking up this DVD anyway.
		By the time Dune has progressed to the point Paul where adopts the new moniker of Muad’Dib and he has gone to the place where women can’t go (again what’s Herbert’s deal with women?) he becomes rather cold and distant, yet a highly important Messiah figure for the galaxy.
