Dune (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dune spawned five sequels written by Herbert, and inspired a film adaptation by David Lynch, a mini-series made by the Sci Fi Channel (United States), computer games, and a series of prequels co-written by Brian Herbert, the author's son, and Kevin J. Anderson.
The Messiah legend is intended as a safety net, allowing on-the-run Bene Gesserit agents to quickly gain the cooperation of a local populace in order to survive or escape pursuit, as the case may be.
Dune is the sole source of melange, also known as "the spice" that gives limited prescience and prolongs the user's lifespan; with it, the Guild Navigators see a path through foldspace (thus enabling faster-than-light travel), and the Bene Gesserit can enhance their mental abilities.

There is a significant passage in Frank Herbert's Dune, spoken by Reverend Mother Ramallo, in which she tells Paul that "when religion and politics ride in the same cart, the whirlwind follows." Of course she means Muad'Dib — he is the whirlwind.

Considering the enormity of this task, the resulting screenplay for Children of Dune is indeed a highly credible achievement that does in fact work well; however, unlike John Harrison’s adaptation of the first Dune, this one is not quite the best that could have been hoped for.
Children of Dune is split into three parts, the first of which handles a condensed version of the events of “Dune: Messiah”, leaving the latter two to handle “Children of Dune” itself.
But again, for all of its flaws, Children of Dune is still a very well made miniseries, and over the course of four a half hours, it does a credible job of bringing Frank Herbert’s “Dune: Messiah” and “Children of Dune” to the screen.
