Dune's problems unfolded over many decades and involved hundreds of people: producers, writers, artists, designers, musicians and directors, who tried in vain to bring Herbert's classic science fiction novel to the screen.
In most cases, Dune projects failed because no one seemed capable enough of writing a script that was both comprehensive and good enough to be made into a movie.
Dune was alien terrain for Lynch, and despite the brilliant director's talents for showcasing the whimsical, no one could digest the intricacies of Frank Herbert's Dune in one sitting and then churn out a script.

 Dune versus Dune
Dune became popular and so did Grandpa thanks to what was actually in the book (Is that a Maker on the cover, or are you just happy to see me?).
Other notables in both versions were Duncan Idaho (Richard Jordan in the movie, James Watson in the miniseries), Emperor Shaddam IV (Jose Ferrer in the movie, Giancarlo Giannini in the miniseries), Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt in the movie, Jaroslava Siktancova in the miniseries), and Stilgar (Everett McGill in the movie, Uwe Ochsenknecht in the miniseries).
Although Harrison had to change some things for the miniseries (most notably the expansion of Princess Irulan's role and Jessica throwing up to show her pregnancy), his adaptation was far superior.

Dune was once controlled by House Harkonnen, but the Emperor has given Dune to House Atreides, sworn enemy of the Harkonnen.
The Children of Dune miniseries gave Harrison a chance to fix up some mistakes; Stilgar in particular is better cast, while the aforementioned role of Princess Irulan continues strongly, and the twin children of the title are probably the best part of the project.
I realize that this miniseries has the advantage of sequels (both in book form, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, and the miniseries that adapted both books, Children of Dune) that examine this issue, but the groundwork that's already here is still superior to the same attempts in the Verhoeven film.

The theatrical cut of “Dune” was eventually re-released on VHS, laserdisc, and DVD in America through Universal Home Entertainment and it seemed that fans of “The Dune Chronicles” would have to satisfy themselves with both cuts of “Dune” and the novels for some time.
Having seen the miniseries already on VHS screeners provided by the network for review purposes before the miniseries premiered and then having caught it during several airings on Sci-Fi, I could say without a doubt that this is the best looking and sounding presentation of “Frank Herbert’s Children Of Dune” that I have seen yet.
What I did not like about the way the miniseries is presented is that right before the end credits for parts one and two are about the start, they are cut and the viewer gets a still stating “the saga continues” before being returned to the menu screen.

But because these women conform to the guidances of their male authority figures or they act only to further the interests of their menfolk, they are loved while everyone is happy to condemn and kill Alia when they could be helping her instead.
