Dune is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert and published in 1965.
Dune spawned five sequels written by Herbert, and inspired a film adaptation by David Lynch, a mini-series made by the Sci Fi Channel (United States), computer games, and a series of prequels co-written by Brian Herbert, the author's son, and Kevin J. Anderson.
Dune is the sole source of melange, also known as "the spice" that gives limited prescience and prolongs the user's lifespan; with it, the Guild Navigators see a path through foldspace (thus enabling faster-than-light travel), and the Bene Gesserit can enhance their mental abilities.

Dune: (Toto/Brian Eno) Many people hold the film and score for Dune close to their heart, yet it was perhaps one of the biggest sci-fi disasters in the history of Hollywood.
And, in strangely a perfect ending, the mess of a movie and mess of a score went remarkably well together.
All together, Dune is a great score that had been poorly presented on CD numerous times.

The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms.
"DUNE" gets better with age (and maturity): I think one of the main reasons the film bombed in 1984 was that the mainstream audience was not yet familiar enough with the "weird" and original artistry of David Lynch, despite the fact that "Elephant Man" had been nominated for oscars only 4 years earlier.
Movies often fail to meet up to the book they are based upon and this is no exception, in my opinion.

Symptoms of this include characters pretty indistinguishable from wooden boards, visuals that are so lavishly constructed that there is absolutely no connection to those actually populating the visuals, and a pace that would seem to suggest that what the main goal of the picture would be putting the audience to sleep.
