College trainees attended some university lectures in English and the principles of education, which were taught by the College Principal doubling as university lecturer (although not with the title of Professor of Education in the university, as in the Dunedin College of Education-University of Otago relationship).
College staff tended to be ex-teachers who took further courses, often with university scholars as their lecturers, in order to broaden their theoretical understanding of teaching and to raise their academic status.

Two South Island teachers' colleges are to merge with their local universities next year, Tertiary Education Minister Michael Cullen announced today.
Dunedin College of Education will become part of Otago University and Christchurch College of Education will merge with the University of Canterbury.
In a joint statement Otago University and the Dunedin College of Education said: "As previously indicated, the merger will result in some reduction in the number of general and academic staff positions at the time of merger, with further adjustments to academic staffing following as a range of new, combined academic programmes commences.

It was appropriate, at close of year 2000 cohort's period of study in Dunedin, to seek their advice regarding programmes for future intakes of overseas students at the Dunedin College of Education.
They recommended that the College should make use of video, initially to provide migrant students with information about Dunedin prior to their leaving their home countries to travel to New Zealand and, subsequently, to provide migrants with an incremental record of their experiences in Dunedin which they might take home with them.

Students may transfer to a course at the Dunedin College of Education on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning for modules completed at our college.
Modules of the Certificate may be cross-credited towards the College Diploma of Teaching (E.C.E.) Entry to Year 2 will require the completion of special bridging modules.
Should the College close unexpectedly due to financial reasons before the course is completed, the college carries insurance to provide each student with a pro rata refund of fees paid by the student based on the date of a course terminating.
