The Verlaines were a rock band from Dunedin, New Zealand notable for combining rock passion with classical compositional ideas.
The band's recorded debut was on the seminal Dunedin Double EP released by Flying Nun Records to debut several bands who would go on to be central to the mythology of the Dunedin Sound.
Downes is an academic at the University of Otago teaching contemporary music and with research interests in Mahler and Shostakovich and has released one solo album, Hammers and Anvils, released on Matador Records in 2001.

The release of the had the immediate effect of giving them big Dunedin Double EP during their time in Auckland audiences and in June they victoriously returned to Dunedin.
Two versions of `Oncoming Day' were recorded, intended for the double A-side single, but instead later released in 1987 on a flexi-disc with the Bucketful of Brains fanzine issue 21 backed with a version of `Dan Destiny And The Silver Dawn' recorded by Phillipps and Moore in 1986.
`Double Summer' was the second single from the album to be released, backed by demo tracks of `Halo Fading' and `Sanctuary' recorded a year earlier by Phillipps and Moore with James Stephenson on drums and sounding radically different from the album versions.

Unfortunately in April before the release of the EP drummer Haig left to join The Verlaines, being replaced by Martyn Bull, and soon after Batts departed.
Rachel Phillipps was hurriedly taken on as the band were just about to depart on a North Island tour as support to The Clean, though once in Auckland she returned to Dunedin so the last gigs there were played as a trio.

 Sneaky Feelings and the Flying Nun Sound
By the time I caught on to the music of New Zealand, bands like the Chills, the Bats and the Verlaines in the early '90's, much of their most exciting and groundbreaking work (for the most part) was behind them.
Here was pop music as I had never heard it before; familiar, recalling as it did the best of '60's psychedelia and '70s pre-punk, but also fresh and otherworldly, evoking the rugged, isolated beauty of that mysterious little corner of the world.
After contributing a shambling EP side to the famed Dunedin Double record which also featured a side each by the Chills, Verlaines and (in a fearless display of cheek) a short-lived band from Dunedin called the Stones, their proper debut, the excellent LP Send You was issued in 1984.
