 A Brief History of New Dungeness Lighthouse
New Dungeness was the first to light, on December 14, 1857, making it the first to be lit in the Strait of Juan de Fuca-Puget Sound areas, and the second to be lit north of Cape Disappointment.
In 1915 the spit attracted national attention when President Woodrow Wilson decreed it to be a Department of Agriculture wild bird reservation with access by the public permitted.
The New Dungeness Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society was formed on September 3, 1994 and obtained, with the aid of the USLHS, a five-year renewable lease with the Coast Guard.

You can hike on either side of the spit except at times when the inside -- the bay side -- is closed to protect wildlife.

There is supposed to be 5.5 miles of spit - the longest in the U.S. The day started off cloudy, but a blue patch developed and finally reached us, leaving us with a few sprinkles followed by sunny weather the rest of the day.
We hiked out to the end of Graveyard spit (the spit the runs southward from about 3/4 the way out along Dungeness spit), which is closed to provide sanctuary to the wildlife.
About half way back we moved to the inland side of the spit to get out of the wind (which was at our backs on the way out, but in our faces on the way back in) where it was getting a bit chilly.

I was fortunate to have a driver on Bainbridge Island pick two of us up at the ferry dock and handle the driving.
The south side of the spit is all refuge.
The spit is curved enough to keep you from seeing the lighthouse until you are most of the way there.

Sequim, WA did a training in Port Angeles, WA, just before Judy found a job in Seattle, so she was able to join me for the last few days and we saw a little of the Olympic Peninsula.
We went for walk on the Spit, a 4 mile expanse of beach that is surrounded on two sides by water.
We also spent an afternoon driving through the Olympic Game Farm talking to and feeding the animals.
