While it is a Dungeon Crawl, but it's not one big dungeon (or medium sized), but basically 5 small-ish ones.
Obviously, as a Dungeon Crawl, it's a bit lacking when it comes to NPCs that aren't meant to be killed (this is actually used as a selling point), but there is a town (Fair Haven) detailed briefly (just a few shops and such) with a few friendly NPCs.
And there are a couple prisoners in the dungeons themselves which may or may not be friendly in the long run, much like the old classic modules had NPCs that you weren't completely sure of.

Games had sent players into dungeons to fight monsters and ransack treasure before, such as Exidy's Venture, but never before Gauntlet had the visuals of the game been so lush, from the texture of the stone walls of the labyrinthine dungeon to the swirl of the Wizard's cloak.
You guided a fighter through several dozen levels of dungeon, populated with monsters, treasure, magic potions, and monster-spawners which generated the swarms of enemies that often threatened to surround and overpower the party.
Xbox Live has brought back the qualities of it that made it the most fun game in the arcade—it was always a blast going down into that dungeon with a couple of players that hopefully had your back, and often became friends if they weren't already.

  Dungeon crawl Information
A dungeon crawl is a type of role-playing adventure in which the characters fight their way through an extensive dungeon (or other labyrinthine environment, such as a castle or cave), killing the Dragons, Orcs and other monsters that live there and looting any treasure they find.
A dungeon crawl session can be used as a way to relieve job or family related stress, with players getting together not with the goal of living an epic tale or creating a mythical Other Place, but simply to "kick evil's ass and take its stuff."
Due to their potential for simplicity and the limited expectations most players have for plot and logical consistency in dungeon crawls, they are popular in computer role-playing games.

 DailyGame Review: Metal Dungeon [Xbox]
It's not that the dungeon crawler is a bad sort of game, it's just that it takes a lot to make a good one, and an almost divine group of developers to make a great one.
Sadly, Metal Dungeon does both the RPG and the dungeon crawl genres a grave disservice as it tries to be both but fails miserably, presenting the user with nothing more than a shallow gameplay experience mixed with a mind-numbingly dull combat system.
The wall textures in the dungeon are actually pretty nice, but it's obvious that they have about four different wall panels that they used for the game, and so there's no variety in the textures.

 Dungeon Crawl
The goal of Crawl is to recover the Orb of Zot that is hidden deep within the dungeon.
While accomplishing this goal, the player will have to visit other branches of the dungeon such as the orcish mines and the lair which is filled with more natural beasts.
The skills include the ability to move freely in armor, move silently, attack things effectively with different types of weapons (pole arms, long blades, short blades, maces, whips, and staffs), cast spells from different areas of magic (the elements, necromancy, conjuration, enchantments, summoning) and the ability to use magical artifacts or pray to the gods.

Dungeon Twister review, by Tom Vasel
In fact, it's hard to describe to people without mentioning "chess" and "dungeon crawl", and the two are so different that it's hard to imagine them in the same game.
The back story to the game involves an all-powerful wizard dropping random contestants into a dungeon with twisting floors, and forcing them to play games for his amusement (and their freedom).
But for me it was a tremendous pairing, a dungeon game that I could tout as having a lot of strategy; fun, but full of depth at the same time.

Dungeon Crawl Classics #9: Dungeon Geomorphs Review -- December 3, 2004 | d20 Magazine Rack
The segments depict a variety of caverns, castles, hallways, lairs, dungeons, mazes, and temples, as well as two blank geomorphs so that you can devise your own (of course, if you had time to devise your own, why would you need this book?).
Also, while it's possible to design an entire dungeon using the templates, you're going to need to do some adjusting or players will catch on after a while, especially if they are the type to keep careful maps.
On the other hand, if you're one of those people who take great pride in every dungeon you make, making sure that everything is consistent with the greater plan and lovingly detailing the method for opening each and every secret door, then you're going to find yourself disappointed with this product.

OgreCave.com - Reviews - DCC #1: Idylls of the Rat King
One of the best releases from last year was Goodman Games' $2 dungeon, Dungeon Crawl Classics #11: The Dragonfiend Pact, an incredibly wallet-friendly adventure that gave you an entertaining session or two's worth of old time dungeon bashing.
Although Dungeon Crawl Classics #1: Idylls of the Rat King is designed for the modern incarnation of the game, its tone and ethos, along with the rest of the series, is pure Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: First Edition.
Certainly in comparison with Dungeon Crawl Classics #11, some ten modules later, the first entry in the series is of a singular combative note, requiring less thought from the players.

 Fudge Factor: Fudge Dungeon Crawl
It is assumed at the start of any Fudge Dungeon Crawl game that the characters are already in possession of all of their equipment.
As the characters are adventuring in a distant land, they hear the tale of an evil warlord named Krugerov who ruled with an iron fist until his subjects rebelled against him and razed his castle to the ground, killing him and his wizard advisor in the process.
Rumors of vast dungeons filled with treasure assault their adventurous ears, and it is because of those rumors that we find the characters standing amidst the ruins of Castle Krugerov, staring down a forboding set of stairs leading down into the ground.
