Dungog was first settled in the 1820s and is the focus of a diversity of economic activities including agriculture and industry.
Dungog, and sister towns of Clarence Town, Gresford/East Gresford and Paterson, are the “Gateway to the Forests” - the forests of the Barringtons.
The Dungog district is located on the rich alluvial flats of the Williams and the Paterson Rivers, two of the clean mountain streams emanating from the southern falls of the Barringtons.

The main street of Dungog, named after Chief Justice James D. Dowling (an early landholder in the district), is an urban conservation area.
Head north of Dungog along Chichester Dam Rd. Just a little further on, heading off to the left, is Dowling Rd. Like its namesake in Dungog (and South Dowling St in Sydney) it is named after supreme court judge and future chief justice James D. Dowling.

Last night, council agreed to transfer the vessel to Dungog council to be displayed in a Clarencetown museum.
The ship, which still is not operational, has been a big drain on council's resources, with more than $300,000 spent on its restoration.
Its move to Dungog is dependent on a Federal Government grant, expected to be announced next month - if that fails, the paddle steamer will be sold.

The following photos were taken in the town of Dungog, where there is even a garage that seems to specialise in LR repairs - we saw a local SES or rural fire service truck there one day (on my SLR camera - will post eventually).
The countryside between Gresford and Dungog is very similar to that around the Vacy Gresford area as well, all your other town shots around Dungog were taken in Dowling St (main drag) and the side street Hooke St off the footpath in front of the Bank hotel.
We were in the Dungog area just a few weeks ago and I recall saying to Numpty that there seemed to be a Landie in almost every driveway!!

Around here the road turns to gravel, travel is easy we did it with two children on Tagalongs and fully loaded with camping gear.
From this point it would be reasonable to return home or continue on to Dungog.
There are alternatives to this next section,however we found a beautiful river crossing by taking the few KLms along the main road at this point.
