The Church of the Brethren was organized by Alexander Mack, a miller, in Schwarzenau, Germany, in 1708.
There are several Brethren groups that are not related to the Schwarzenau Brethren movement, such as the Plymouth Brethren that arose in England and Ireland early in the 19th century, and the United Brethren originating in 18th century Pennsylvania with William Otterbein and Martin Boehm.

We, as the Dunkard Brethren Church, Inc., seek exemption from the 1983 Social Security Amendments affecting churches, inasmuch as these regulations of involuntary application and enforcemente of Social Security are contrary to a sincerely held Biblical conviction that the government should not tax God or His Church.
Members may be accepted into the Dunkard Brethren Church from religious groups of similar faith and practice, who have been baptized by trine immersion for the remission of sins, after being fully instructed as all applicants for membership, and are to be asked to make the usual answer of acceptance, approved by the Church Council.
The Dunkard Brethren Church is opposed to any homosexual practices and in order for such a person to be a member of the Dunkard Brethren Church, they must be regenerated, forsaking these practices, in accord with the Scriptures.

The Dunkard Brethren Church, founded in 1928, is a conservative element of the Church of the Brethren.
Yet the Dunkard Brethren have preserved a remarkable homogeneity, the great annual meeting, which is an annual reunion as well, being a definite element in preserving unity of outlook.
The Brethren were in their earlier history much more aggressive than the Mennonites, hence have grown much more rapidly and secured a larger proportion of members from the "outside." Numerous Mennonites were won by early Brethren evangelistic efforts and many names in the Brethren Church of today are Mennonite in origin: e.g., Bowman, Moyer, Ziegler.
