Dunkirk (French: Dunkerque; Dutch: Duinkerke; German: Dünkirchen) is a harbour city and a commune in the northernmost part of France, in the département of Nord, 10 km from the Belgian border.
Population of the city (commune) at the 1999 census was 70,850 inhabitants (71,300 inhabitants as of February 2004 estimates).
In the Eighty Years War the port was the base of the infamous Dunkirker Raiders until the city was conquered by Louis XIII of France in 1646.

A large number of craft including fishing boats, fire ships, paddle steamers, private yachts, and Belgian barges, together with Merchant Marine and Royal Navy vessels, were gathered at Sheerness and sent to Dunkirk and the surrounding beaches to recover Allied troops.
By May 31 the Allied forces were compressed into a 5 km deep strip from De Panne, through Bray-Dunes to Dunkirk, but on that day over 68,000 troops were evacuated with another 10,000 or so overnight.
Some of the evacuated troops, both French and British, were shipped straight back to the battle of France via ports in Normandy and Brittany, where most were killed or captured.

His service record shows he was posted to "No1 Base Depot" in France in December 1939, returning to the U.K. on 23 June 1940, almost 3 weeks after Dunkirk, and was sent to Marbury Hall in Cheshire to await posting.
What I would like to know is what happened to him (or his unit) whilst he was in France, especially after Dunkirk and where did he return from, to the U.K. Most books I have found on the subject either end immediatley after Dunkirk or only skim over the surface thereafter.
