The various roads radiating westwards and northwards from Dunmanway lead to the scenic rugged heartland of West Cork which is in marked contrast to the coves and inlets of the coastal area.

Playing Handball Against a Haystack: A Response to Brian Hanley's Defence of Peter Hart - Indymedia Ireland
After the cessation of hostilities a conscious decision was taken on the republican side not to dwell on the role of spies or informers, and particularly not to expose the role of loyalist informers within the Protestant community.
It is important to note that even though loyalists in the Bandon-Dunmanway area attempted to foment sectarian division of the type that unionists succeeded in creating in the North of Ireland (with the assistance of British policy in both cases), their success was partial.
Dunmanway is pretty much the only example where a serious case can by made for organised sectarianism coming from the republican movement (and you do a good job of answering the case above).

Ballinscarthy residents would be the first to tell you that those from Dunmanway were decent enough people, they supposed, although they did have the odd way about them.
The odd way in question was not some characteristic displayed by a Dunmanway but, rather an expectation by the Balliniscarthys that a Dunmanway would in fact do something that would validate their conviction.
Any word or deed that was outside of the ordinary would suffice and would lead to a smug, knowing look by the Ballinscarthys, which they passed on with a small smile to one another.

Now it's History (Ireland)! Peter Hart replies on Tom Barry and Kilmichael (but not Dunmanway) - Indymedia Ireland
The omission of a reference to Dunmanway is also surprising given that the interviewer wrote in The Village (Nov 6 2004) that the Dunmanway question is “much more serious” than the “increasingly sterile debate about Kilmichael”.
Aside from the asinine nature of this observation, the physical juxtaposition of the Dunmanway killings with the name of Tom Barry is unfortunate.
The killing of the 10 Protestants in Dunmanway is not even mentioned despite its prominent part in his original book with its arresting chapter heading “Taking it out on the Protestants” and its use as absolute proof that the war was sectarian.
