Dunn earned his BA in History and English from Hofstra University in 1962, where he was a key player on a basketball team that went 25-1 and is generally regarded as the greatest team in school history.
Dunn said the full impact of winning the Pulitzer Prize had not hit him, a few minutes after the word was officially flashed over the news wires and the Pulitzer website.

Born in London, a cousin of actress Gretchen Franklin, Dunn played small film roles from the 1930s onwards.
Dunn was actually one of the younger members of the cast, at 48, when he took on the role of the elderly butcher whose military service in earlier wars made him the most experienced member of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard, as well as the most decrepit.

Dunn was discovered in Memphis by W.C. Handy in 1916 and worked for him until he left in 1920 to take over Blues singer Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds.
Dunn then formed his own band called the Original Jazz Hounds that featured singer Edith Wilson (who later became famous as Aunt Jemima in Quaker Oats commercials), whom he had met while playing in the Plantation Revue on Broadway.
Dunn died of tuberculosis in Paris in 1937.
