The parish is bounded NW and N by the Pentland Firth, E by Canisbay, SE by Bower, SW by Bower and Olrig, and W by Dunnet Bay.
Dunnet Head, 4 miles long and from 1l to 3 miles across, goes northward from the vicinity of the village to a semicircular termination; and, consisting mainly of a hill ridge diversified with heights and hollows, it stoops precipitously to the sea all round its coast in broken rocks from 100 to 306 feet high.
Dunnet is in the presbytery of Caithness and synod of Sutherland and Caithness; the living is worth £311.

In the spring of 1940 this scheme was extended to the north of Shetland and to the Pentland Firth.
Dunnet Head, Admiralty Experimental Station No. 6, was the last to be constructed, work beginning in the summer of 1940 on high ground just to the south of the lighthouse.
The naval chapter in the story of Dunnet Head came to an end in October 1943 when the station transferred to the Royal Air Force when it was designated Station 49B under 70 Wing RAF, being operated by them until the station closed down.

The walk from the beach around the cliffs to Dunnet Head was along some beautiful moorland, and I cold make good progress along the ground, which was mostly level with only occasional climbs.
Dunnet Head is the northernmost point on the mainland of Britain, and as such is the fourth cardinal point that I have visited on the walk, after the easternmost point (The Ness in Lowestoft), the southernmost (the Lizard), and the westernmost (Ardnamurchan Point).
We spent the night in the car park beside the lighthouse at Dunnet Head, which had some superb view past the lighthouse to the Orkney Islands.

The contest group of the Mid Lanark Amateur Radio Society once again took part in the CQ WW SSB contest, but this year we operated from Dunnet Head, the most Northerly point on the British mainland.

Well worth the walk on a sunny day and especially as you have the beautiful backdrop of Dunnet Head beckoning you on to Dunnet Beach and the Ranger Centre there.
Dunnet Links is one of the largest sand-dune areas in the North of Scotland and the reserve hosts at least 230 different plant species, one of which is the Scottish Primrose which is only found on the North coast of Scotland and in the Orkney Isles.
The people of Dunnet, along with Caithness County Council funded and constructed this pier and slipway.

Repute has it that John O'Groats is the northern most part of the UK (with Land's End in Cornwall being the southern most part).
This isn't as such true, as the most northern part of the UK is at Dunnet Head just to the west of John O'Groats.
Still, the great end-to-end walks and charity events all run from Land's End to John O'Groats and so for many tourists is has become a must-see stop on their tour of the UK.
