  Save Dunsink Observatory Petition
Dunsink's long tradition of interaction with the public (Open Nights, group visits, provision of lighting-up times for legal purposes etc) makes it the natural reference point for the general public on astronomical issues, as is attested by the numerous daily enquiries.
Dunsink has been synonymous with Irish astronomy for the last 200 years, and we believe that aborting its research now sends the wrong message to the Irish public and the international community about the current state of Irish astronomy.
Dunsink would be the natural focus for this celebration and terminating its current successful functioning at this juncture would be particularly unfortunate.

IAS Orbit Article on the 12" Grubb
This Dunsink instrument, with a 12-inch lens of French manufacture, was important in the sequence of astronomical telescopes built in Dublin by Grubb's, many of which are still in use.
The telescope at Dunsink uses a lens donated to Trinity College in 1863 by Sir James South, F.R.S., a Victorian astronomer of private means who engaged in many heated controversies with his contemporaries, but who maintained a friendship with the Third Earl of Rosse and T.Romney Robinson at Armagh Observatory.
The refinements that followed the Dunsink instrument and were incorporated on the Vienna telescope included provision for mechanical control of the drive rate by a pendulum, thus increasing the potential accuracy of drive by an order of magnitude.

Heretofore, before we proceeded to buy equipment for a State institution, the courtesy used to be paid to Dáil Éireann of at least going through the form of inquiring as to whether the House approved of the erection of the institution or not.
We are now blandly informed that the Government has bought Dunsink, and all its equipment, with a view to establishing the School of Cosmic Physics and that, when they have time to get around to it, they will come and consult the House about the steps necessary to set on foot that institute.
