  TheClydebankStory - Neighbourhoods: Duntocher
Among the early written records relating to Duntocher is a reference in the Paisley Abbey rental book of 1460, which notes that a corn mill was leased by Thome de Strabrock.
The United Presbyterian Church is Duntocher's oldest, the congregation having formed in 1779.
Duntocher Trinity, the parish church, was built in 1836, the first minister being the Reverend John Pollock.

Passing Dalmuir by the steamer, a fine range of hills is seen stretching from east to west, and approaching the margin of the river immediately previous to its enlargement into the noble proportions of a frith.
In proportion to its size, Duntocher seems to he amply supplied with the "means and appliances" of religious and intellectual culture.
About half-way between Duntocher and Kilpatrick there is a gentle eminence called Dalnottar, from the brow of which is obtained one of the most lovely and richly variegated prospects imaginable.

 DUNTOCHER
The fort at Duntocher was excavated between 1948-51 and also in 1977.
There are four inscriptions on stone recorded in the R.I.B. from the environs of the Duntocher fort.
There are a couple of building inscriptions recording work done on the rampart wall by one of the British legions, in this case Legio II Augusta, who were normally stationed at Caerleon in South Wales, both of which are decorated with a Capricorn above and a Pegasus below.

Duntocher, located on the Northern outskirts of Clydebank, opened in 1907.
Duntocher Hospital entered the National Health Service in 1948 under the Board of Management for Dunbartonshire Hospitals, was placed in the Greater Glasgow Health Board Western District in 1974 and closed in 1991.
The site of the hospital can still be clearly seen on the left hand side of the road from Bearsden to Duntocher as a housing estate has been built within the original boundary of the site.

 Libraries - West Dunbartonshire
In 1808, the population of Duntocher was less than 200 but it soon grew dramatically with the demand for labour in William Dunn's (read article about William Dunn) (access key = w) operations.
Duntocher's first public school was opened in 1876 where the Glenhead Centre now stands.
It was bombed in 1941 and the pupils had to be accommodated in makeshift huts in the playground until Goldenhill School was opened in 1955.

 History
The Clydebank Burgh Band traces its origins to the Spinners Band that was established in Duntocher circa 1829.
In the mid-1870's this band became the Duntocher Brass Band and is still in existence to this day.
It took a court action to decide that the instruments did indeed belong to Duntocher, whereupon they had to be handed back.

The town, then only a village, about the end of last century became a seat of cotton manufacture; but its mill was closed in 1808, when the Gartclash property passed to William Dunn (1770-1849).
By him the mill was reopened and greatly extended, and to him Duntocher owed its rapid expansion.
Since 1831 it was the seat of trade or the four large cotton - mills of Duntocher itself, Faifley, Hardgate, and Miltonfield, all four within a mile of one another.

Duntocher Bridge is on the A82 Great Western Road to the west of Glasgow, between the A8014 Kilbowie Road roundabout and the junction with the A810 Dumbarton Road.
The bridge is at the bottom of a small dip, and is probably not even noticed by motorists.
Although it looks very much like a bridge, RCAHMS records it as an early 19th century cotton mill.

At one time this was the most north westerly point on the Glasgow Corporation Transport tram system, trams operating from here via Hardgate to Clydebank, and at times, on to Partick depot.
Duntocher historically had several cotton and corn mills, driven by the Duntocher Burn.
The Antonine Wall also runs through the village, and ancient Roman fortifications are still visible in the local Goldenhill Park.

The Club was formed in 1919, so we have just recently celebrated our 80th Anniversary.
We fish the Cochno Loch and Jaw Reservoir which are situated adjacent to each other in the Kilpatrick Hills just a few miles north of the town of Clydebank behind the villages of Duntocher and Hardgate.
Although as this picture of the Cochno Loch shows, the scenery is very attractive and it is difficult to imagine that you are no more than 10 miles from Glasgow city centre.

The photo of St Mary's Duntocher is my school class of 1947/48.
The photos with the windows were always taken in the quadrangle of the school This square area was surrounded by the four inner walls of the school.
Can anyone remember 1947 being a real big snow fall, I lived in Duntocher that year, Carlieth Ave I think it was, then when I was 8 I went to Duntocher Rd. Parkhall, and went to Canada from there in Sept 1959.

A settlement situated on the Cochne Water 9 miles (14½ km) northwest of Glasgow, Duntocher has become a northern suburb of Clydebank.
In the 18th century ironworks were established and in the 19th Century Duntocher became a cotton spinning village, attracting migrants from Ireland and the Highlands.
