Karton Boulevard Imbérica incorporates pop music of the south of the Iberian Peninsula, Eastern Europe and contemporary music and freejazz into a potent personal art form, pushing the limits of the 'folk root' to the max, never losing the Spanish tinge but never lock-step in the tradition.

Drawn from the motions of work and play, dance is a strong part of community life in Guinea.
Together with the rhythmically thrilling music from native instruments like the djembe, balafon, kora, kenkeni, dunumba, and siko, Les Percussions de Guinée express the most admired qualities of its homeland.
Through drums, like the sacred djembe, and through dance, the group also seeks to spread its message of peace and friendship that is central to Guinean culture and our world today and to tell of its country’s rich history, and its people’s traditional values and spiritual energy.

The Dunumba is one of the most important, and is known as the dance of the strong men, where rows are formed in concentric circles through the Bara (round ground with a great tree in the center).
Sometimes, however, there are magical moments of collective dance, when they do parts of the Dunumba in circular rows, or even the different ends for warm-ups with three to ten dancers, when they get excited with a beautiful individual dance of someone.
Everyone helps in the good unwinding of the party, where the musicians take turns and there is a organizer of the dance, usually an art director of some ballet, or a respected dancer, who gives a kerchief to the one who will dance next.

It is more traditional in the sense that, unlike Wassolon and Nankama, in which Didier played both sangban and dunumba on most tracks, AFÖ features three separate dunun players on all but one of the nine tracks, whether the dununs are played horizontally each with a bell, or played vertically with two sticks.
This long break drops neatly into Djaa, a dance of seduction (this version is from the Kankan/Kourousa region).
This is one of my personal favorite rhythms with its wonderful conversation between the sangban and dunumba parts.

The three dunun drums pictured here and djembés are complementary instruments, the former keeping the timing for different rhythms and creating a polyrhythmic foundation with the help of the kenken bells attached.
The three drums are from the highest pitch (smallest drum) to the lowest pitch, the kenkeni, the sangben, and the big barrel dunumba.
These dunun, or lower drums, have been also called 'doun doun' or 'doundomba' amongst other names which has to do with the instruments musical role in addition to the size of other dununs present in the ensemble.

The typical dundunmba-kenkeni-pattern is not there, but the kenkeni-part of Konden II could be interpretated as a "half-speed" kenkeni of a dunumba.
