Small intestine cancer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In oncology, small intestine cancer, also small bowel cancer and cancer of the small bowel, is a cancer of the small intestine.
Small intestine cancer can be subdivided into duodenal cancer (the first part of the small intestine) and cancer of the jejunum and ileum (the later two parts of the small intestine).
Duodenal cancer is a cancer in the beginning section of the small intestine (see small bowel cancer).

Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer.
Analysis: The incidence of gastric cancer in the cohort subgroups was compared to the age- and sex-adjusted incidence of gastric cancer in the Swedish population at large, to yield a relative risk estimate.
This increase in cancer incidence was not found in a subgroup of 8,646 patients with pre-pyloric gastric ulcers, however.

 Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
FAP is an inherited colorectal cancer syndrome and accounts for 1 percent of all cases of colorectal cancer.
Duodenal polyps can be very subtle and hard to detect, or they may be obvious and cover a large segment of the duodenum.
The colorectal polyps and cancer in attenuated FAP usually occur later in life than in FAP; however, the risk of colon cancer and upper gastrointestinal polyps is the same as in FAP.

Because many sporadic cases of colorectal cancer may have a genetic basis, taking a detailed family history is mandatory to institute appropriate surveillance in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality from colorectal cancer.
Duodenal polyps are adenomas and appear to have some malignant risk as a 5% lifetime occurrence of duodenal cancer is observed in persons with FAP.
Screening should begin by age 40, however, as the risk of colon cancer at age 40 with a positive family history is equivalent to the risk in the general population at age 50.

They weren’t studying endometrial cancer but were impressed enough by the family history to recommend that my sister have an endometrial biopsy in the near future, even offered to do it in the NIH Clinical Center if her doctor at home didn’t want to order it.

Duodenal cancer and desmoids are the leading causes of death in FAP patients after prophylactic colectomy.
The sensitivity of endoscopic procedures for early detection of severely dysplastic or malignant duodenal lesions is low, and the prognosis of duodenal cancer is poor.
Fundic gland polyposis was detected in 79 patients (35%), stomach adenomas in 6 patients (3%) and duodenal adenomas in 92 patients (41%).

 CancerNetwork:
Cancers of the small bowel are relatively rare, with an annual incidence rate of 5,300 in the United States.
Duodenal primaries are less resectable due to anatomic constraints and usually require pancreacticoduodenectomy, whereas jejunoileal tumors are treated with segmental bowel resection and removal of the mesentery.
Duodenal small bowel adenocarcinomas are usually treated similarly to adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.

 AllRefer Health - Duodenal Atresia
Duodenal atresia is a condition in which the duodenum (the first part of the small bowel) has not developed properly.
The cause of duodenal atresia is unknown, but it is thought to result from problems during the embryologic stage in which the duodenum normally changes from solid to tube-like (recanalization).
Duodenal atresia is present in more than 1 in 10,000 live births.

The biopsies from this lesion in the distal part of the duodenal bulb showed a tubular adenoma, and in two biopsies a well differentiated adenocarcinoma was seen. The lumen is still open (seen in the lower part of the pictures, and this carcinoma does not yet cause any gastric retention.
