Jay Arraich’s Photoshop Tips - Duotones
Duotones intended for use in InDesign, PageMaker, or QuarkXPress documents, or high quality print output require much more complicated processes, and are beyond the scope of this tutorial.
However, in order for you to be able to see the duotone effects, which are wonderfully subtle, I wanted to show you a fairly large image, and one of reasonable quality.
Duotones can only be made from Grayscale images, so your first step will be to convert your image to Grayscale.

 APOGEE PHOTO MAGAZINE: Creating Duotones
Duotones, whether made traditionally or in Photoshop, are usually created to add a color tint to fl and white photographs.
First the duotone was created (in Duotone mode) and then the mode was changed to RGB and the gray square area was selected and completely de-saturated.
Generally duotones are made with fl and a second color but can be made with a primary color other than fl, like dark brown or dark blue, but this may tend to shorten the tonal range of the image rather than enlarge it.

 About duotones
Duotones are used to increase the tonal range of a grayscale image.
Sometimes duotones are printed using a fl ink and a gray ink--the fl for shadows and the gray for midtones and highlights.
Duotones are ideal for two-color print jobs with a spot color (such as a PANTONE Color) used for accent.

Anyway, duotones are a bit of trouble because you cannot accurately predict the results on consumer printers.
In effect, duotones are a combination of two grayscale images, using two negatives and two printing plates.
The duotone effect is achieved by imaging the two negatives with different (sometimes very different) tonal ranges.

Duotone, Tritone etc. images can be converted back to RGB or CMYK.
Not relevant to duotones but, in high quality publications included fl and white pictures can look a little special if produced as CMYK images although the stock and press need to be of good quality too to avoid colour shifts.

 Duotone
A Duotone takes a monochrome grayscale image and allows you to take the tonal range, from lightest tones to darkest, and allocate a different colour to specific part of the tonal range.
This dialog is the heart of using Duotones and a great deal of experimentation is needed.
If this is the case, and Duotones interest you, this is a good excuse to pick up a calibration program and spider and finally calibrate your screen.

 Reproducing Color Images as Duotones
The long-term vision inspiring this project is that inks should be chosen to exactly reproduce all the colors present in an original image.
Viewed in three-dimensional color space, the original image colors are a cloud of points and the duotone gamut is a curved surface with straight edges.
The corners of this surface are the colors of the paper, each individual ink, and the combination of both inks.

 Shutterbug: Fun With Photoshop
Duotones, as well as tritones (three colors), and quadtones (four colors) are an effective way to make an original color or gray scale portrait more dramatic.
(Photoshop 5.0, by the way, uses the term duotone for duotones, tritones, and quadtones.) So, thanks to Photoshop 5.0, you can still shoot your portraits on color film, then create original duotones works of art in the digital darkroom (after you convert your color pictures to gray scale images).
Sure, there’s more you can do to enhance duotones even further, like adjusting the individual curves of the colors, but telling you all the duotone possibilities would take up several pages of this magazine.
