Metre (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Metre or meter is the measurement of a musical line into measures of stressed and unstressed "beats", indicated in Western music notation by a symbol called a time signature.
Metre is an entrainment, a representation of changing aspects of music as patterns of temporal invariance, allowing listeners to synchronize their perception, cognition, and behaviour with musical rhythms.
Level of Meter shown to be a spurious concept, since Meter arises from the interaction of two levels of motion, the faster of which provides the pulses, and the slower of which which organizes them in repetitive conceptual groups.

 music theory basics - meter
All meters where the upper number is an even number that is not divisible by 3 (2, 4, 8, etc.) are simple.
Duple is 2, and triple is 3 beats per measure.
For duple meters the upper number will tell you how many beats are in each measure, and the lower number will tell you what sort of note gets the beat.

 Meter
Meter is a metaphor for all the periodic aspects of the human life experience.
Pre-Christian religions used meter in their music; however, with the advent of Christianity in the West, meter was disavowed for use during worship by the early Church fathers as pagan as was the use of musical instruments.
Meters with a regular beat are called regular meters and meters with irregular beats are, not surprisingly, called irregular meters (also, "odd" meters).

Time signature - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For all meters, the first beat (the "downbeat", ignoring any anacrusis) is usually stressed (though not always, for example in reggae where the "offbeats" are stressed); in time signatures with four groups in the bar (such as 4/4 and 12/8), the third beat is often also stressed, though to a lesser degree.
This may be counter-intuitive, but in the Baroque and Classical periods, typically meters with long note values (such as 3/2) were fast tempos, while slow movements were typically written with the eighth note as the beat.
Assuming the breve to be a beat, this corresponds to the modern concepts of triple meter and duple meter, respectively.

A comparison of the means of the oral test revealed duple meter patterns received the highest score, triple meter patterns received the middle score, and unusual paired patterns received the lowest score which suggests that the order of oral pattern difficulty from easy to difficult is as follows: duple meter, triple meter, unusual paired meter.
Meter seemed to be the most important characteristic in determining rhythm pattern difficulty: other characteristics of rhythm patterns were not clearly identified by the difficulty levels.

Practical Guide to 18th Century Drumming - Lesson Two
Meter is defined as the basic recurrent rhythmical pattern of note values, accents, and beats per measure in music.
Conversely, if the meter is "compound" the upper number indicates the number of "divisions" of the beat occurring within a measure, while the bottom number indicates which note is the "division" of the beat.
Meter (or time) is considered "simple" when each beat can be divided by 2.

Three of the four children engaged in duple meter with two of those children occasionally changing the feeling of meter to suit their own purposes.
Also, children at this age are developing a sense of meter (Flohr, 1985; Swanwick & Tillman, 1986) which may account for why only one child sang consistently in duple meter while two of the children had meter that changed.
In addition, the music of the children's culture, which tends to be major in tonality and duple in meter, may also have an effect on how the children perceive meter (Gordon, 1997).

Quadruple meter is a metric pattern comprising four beats: the first beat is strongest, the third beat is less strong, and the second and fourth beats are weak.
Since quadruple meter is an extension of duple meter, it still feels like two groups of two.
Of the four beats in quadruple meter, the first is the strongest, the third is less strong, and the second and fourth beats are weak.

Most marches are in duple meter, with two beats per measure (alternating a strong beat with a weak beat 1 - 2
Quadruple meter gives this famous melody a broad feeling; it has four beats to the measure (with the primary accent on the first beat, and a secondary accent on the third beat).
Sextuple meter gives this flowing melody a lilting feeling; it has six beats to the measure with accents on the first and fourth beats 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6).

Rhythm is often defined to consist of the actually sounding durations of music, while meter is the alternation of strong and weak beats, or the interaction of pulse strata, that are inferred from the rhythm.
From this perspective, he says, meter is "a process in which the determinacy of the past is molded to the demands of the emerging novelty of the present." (168).
This shows a half-note projection Q, corresponding to a potential duple meter, that is denied by events starting at the asterisk that favor (say, by motivic repetition) a dotted-half projection R. However, in some music a quintuple meter, five beats per measure, may be treated and perceived as one unit of five, especially at faster tempos.
A few composers of orchestral music who write using mixed meters write very long, thin numbers for their time signatures rather than the standard method of writing it on each staff; this is an aid to the conductor, who can see them more easily.

Thus in compound meter a 6 in the upper number signifies duple meter; a 9 as the upper number is triple meter; and a 12 means the music is in quadruple meter.
When encountering a time signature with 6, 9, or 12 as the upper number, we know that this is a compound meter and that it has 2, 3, or 4 beats per measure, not 6, 9, or 12.
Recognizing the compound meter, we also know that the bottom number is not the beat unit, but is a division of the beat.

 METER and SUBDIVISION
For example, fast music in a triple meter could be heard as a slow or moderate tempo (60 beats per minute) with its beat subdivided into three parts, or as a very fast stream of beats (180 beats per minute) that are grouped into threes.
The regularity of meter gives rise to a set of expectations, and these expectations can be manipulated to create emotion, motion, surprise, etc.   For example, in a 4-beat meter ("4/4" or "common time"), the first beat is the strongest beat, and the third beat is the next strongest.
Rhythm is not to be confused with meter.
