  Dupondius - Definition, explanation
The dupondius (Latin two-pounder) was a bronze coin used during the Roman Empire and Roman Republic valued at 2 asses (1/2 of a sestertius or 1/8 of a denarius).
The dupondius was further distinguished from the similarly sized as with the addition of a radiate crown to the bust of the emperor in 66 AD during the time of Nero.

 The Portraiture of Caligula
Perhaps the most interesting coin of all, however, is the third one, the much debated dupondius which depicts a seated figure believed by many to be Caligula.
Traits of Calilgula which we have established are apparent on this piece: Hollow temples in the forehead, a broad Claudian cranium, deep set eyes, a narrow chin, and the locks over the forehead are fuller.
The hair does not go down the nape of the neck quite as far as hair on the aes and consensv dupondius, but this head is well preserved and may be the most representative in-the-round image of the Emperor Caligula in existence.

Jasper Burns - Vipsania on Roman Coins?
These issues imply that Drusus' dupondius became a prototype for coins honoring deceased imperial women that was copied by widely scattered provincial mints.
As Vipsania was the only woman qualified for this posthumous numismatic honor in A. the provincial copies are strong evidence that the prototype dupondii were struck for her.
These gems, one in Berlin (see Figure 10) and the other in Paris, show a woman in the guise of the goddess Ceres with the tiny figures of two infants of the same age, presumably Livilla with her twins.

After the reform of the coinage system by Augustus, the dupondius was struck in orichalcum and was very similar in size and color to the as.
The dupondius was struck until the time of Trajan.
The quadrans was the lowest denomination coin and, perhaps for that reason, was seldom graced by an emperor's portrait.

The Roman As - Money Meanderings
The brass coins were the Sesterius and Dupondius, and the copper the As, a coin that had a different form in the Republic.
Although one Dupondius was equal to two Asses, their weights often were the same or very close to the same.
Often, though not always, the head on the As has a laurel wreath while that of the Dupondius is radiate (has a crown with rays like the sun).

This is a first use of the metal tin for the Romans at least in coinage.
The reason for this confusion in the uses of the word brass or bronze lies in modern technology because zinc, which is used to get Brass - was not discovered until 1746.
Therefore in reference to the ancient Dupondius of this time period please be content with the word Brass.

By its size and metal, I guessed the coin to be a dupondius, then one-half a bronze sestertius in value, or one-eighth of a silver denarius.
The dupondius was usually more brassy and squarish in shape, to distinguish it from the as, the denomination of half that value, i.e., one-sixteenth denarius.
The as was generally a reddish bronze, whereas the dupondii and sestertii were made of brass, orichalcum, typically an alloy 80% copper and 20% zinc.
