Conrad is approximately 35 miles east of the Birch Creek Ranch and is situated in the heart of the Golden Triangle, referred to as Montana's breadbasket.

The creek was named before the town, "Dupuyer" being derived from a French word that trappers and explorers used to denote the back fat of a buffalo, a prized delicacy.
John and Leanne were both born in the area and remember ranging up and down the creek as children, a pastime their own children are not allowed to pursue because of all the mountain lions and grizzlies.

French fur trappers, English and Scottish sheep ranchers, and Native Americans from the Blackfeet Nation were some of the earliest inhabitants of Dupuyer.
A beaverslide (one word), on the other hand, is something entirely unrelated to Dupuyer before the turn of the last century.

On Wednesday, however, the bears traveled west of Dupuyer Creek landing in the heart of several calving areas.
Tom Salansky, a rancher in the South Fork of Dupuyer Creek, said he is relieved knowing the bear is captured.

Blackleaf Creek exits the Front through a narrow notch between the towering 1200 vertical foot walls of Volcano Reef to the north and an unnamed but perhaps even more impressive massif to the south.
North of Blackleaf Creek, trail #153 ascends just shy of 1000 vertical feet through mostly open slopes between Volcano Reef and Mount Frazier before descending to the South Fork Dupuyer Creek.
Following trail #153 south from Blackleaf Creek is the route I used on a recent trip, and I highly recommend it.

So, Saturday we headed up toward the entrance of the Bob Marshall Wilderness west of Dupuyer, up the North Fork of Dupuyer Creek, which flows out of a deep canyon between Old Man of the Hills and Walling Reef mountains.
The North Fork Dupuyer Canyon is one of the most beautiful on the front, very similar to the Blackleaf Canyon, but grander.
The walls are higher and smoother, the creek faster and with more water in it than Blackleaf Creek, and the area much more pristine since Blackleaf has been logged, roaded and subjected to natural gas development.
