Topic: Durability (computer science)

In the News (Sat 2 Jun 12)

Durability (computer science) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In database systems, durability is the ACID property that guarantees that transactions that are successfully committed will survive permanently and will not be undone by system failure.
Durability also guarantees that the system will not rollback the transaction because the seat was double-booked.
Durability is usually implemented by flushing the transaction's log records to disk before acknowledging commitment.

Advanced durability and wind noise analyses typically require computer runs greater than two weeks, and this is with coarse models on the fastest machines we have access to.
The result was an advance in the areas of computer science that dealt with parallel processing.
If advanced computing capability becomes available in the form of next generation supercomputers, the scientific community and the private sector would be able to utilize them for the application of new science.

Parallel computing refers to the simultaneous use of multiple compute resources to solve a computational problem, as opposed to serial computation, in which software is executed by a single computer with a single central processing unit that performs one instruction at a time.
These compute resources can be a single computer with multiple processors, multiple computers connected by a network, or a combination of both.
Parallel computing is considered "high performance," and are used for numerical simulations of complex systems and processing large amounts of data, in both scientific and commerical applications.

Science courses taken beyond high school, in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program, should be laboratory oriented, with an emphasis on bench skills.
Overall employment of science technicians is expected to increase about as fast as average for all occupations through the year 2014.
In 2005, the average annual salary in nonsupervisory, supervisory, and managerial positions in the Federal Government was $38,443 for biological science technicians; $50,264 for physical science technicians; $62,854 for geodetic technicians; $48,238 for hydrologic technicians; and $58,725 for meteorological technicians.

Some hold a degree in computer science, mathematics, or information systems, whereas others have taken special courses in computer programming to supplement their study in fields such as accounting, inventory control, or other areas of business.
Science technicians need at least an associate degree in applied science, depending on the field (nuclear, forensic science, agriculture, etc.).
Dual graduate degrees in operations research and computer science are especially attractive to employers.

It is widely believed that in antiquity, theory and practice were on opposite sides of an unbridgeable divide and that science and technology were marginal to ancient society.
Ancient engineers saw their knowledge as cumulative and progressive and believed that they were making an important contribution to the welfare of cities and the power of kings and emperors.

Computing research is sought to meet several challenges: control and integration of the vast amounts of information flowing through battlespace computer networks, protection of friendly information resources, and complexities in software and algorithm development in support of dynamic planning and execution control.
For the purpose of this announcement, bioinformatics and computational biology are defined broadly to include the use of theory, computer implementation and application to the full spectrum of basic research in the biomedical sciences.
Scientists, engineers, and science educators may initiate proposals, which are typically submitted by their employing organizations, including colleges and universities, nonprofit, non-academic institutions (including research organizations), and for-profit organizations.

 NSDI '06 Abstract
First, durability can be provided separately from availability; the former is less expensive to ensure and a more useful goal for many wide-area applications.
Second, the focus of a durability algorithm must be to create new copies of data objects faster than permanent disk failures destroy the objects; careful choice of policies for what nodes should hold what data can decrease repair time.
A simulation of Carbonite storing 1 TB of data over a 365 day trace of PlanetLab activity shows that Carbonite is able to keep all data durable and uses 44% more network traffic than a hypothetical system that only responds to permanent failures.

The Orbiter Experiments Recorder (OEX), which wasn't designed to have the durability of the flight data recorders used on commercial aircraft, survived the searing heat of re-entry because it was shielded by a larger section of the shuttle's interior.
The low-tech device may have yielded the best information so far about what occurred on board during Columbia's last mission, because key parts of the modern radio telemetry being beamed back to Earth from the shuttle ended when the ship was torn apart.
