Scattered Intelligence Agency :: View topic - Tankers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Replenishment ships are high value units - they need hefty self-defense.
Navy oilers cost more than a VLCC because, despite being smaller, they have unrep rigs (VLCCs don't), they have mil-spec comm equipment (because commercial stuff doesn't provide capabilities and security), and they have other equipment incidental to being a military ship, not just a merchant that needs to transport fuel from here to there.
Oilers are needed, and they must be built to robust military specifications.
