 André Durand Chronology 1964-1985
Durand believes that the creative person strives to restore to man the whole of his nature in a contradictory world where, while the possibilities for its development are perhaps greater than ever before, the disintegrating forces working against it are proportionately greater.
Durand varies this idealization by creating a particular feeling of elegance in his pictures, partly through careful choice of surroundings, and partly by posing his subjects in complex attitudes not unlike Italian Mannerist painters tend to do.
Durand has taken as his theme youthful, multi racial ideology and the picture he has painted is based on the Olympic ideal.

By the time of his death, Durand had amassed a collection of some 3,000 volumes, some 500 from the 16th century and another 600 from the 17th through 19th centuries, the rest being mainly 20th-century works of history, literature and criticism.

Canute Malcolm: Ambassador Durand, you made it clear that one of the issues that was certainly pivotal to the discourse at the Monterrey Summit was that surrounding democracy and governance.
Ambassador Durand: Well the Canadian government’s view, and I think it is shared by our partners in the OAS, is that corruption really does drain the credibility out of the democratic process, in addition to the economic damage it does by discouraging investment in countries or organizations hat are corrupt.

 IHAS: Artist/Movement/Ideas
Beginning with the works of Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) and evolving into the Luminist and late Romantic schools, landscape painting was the prevalent genre of 19th century American art.
In it Durand depicts himself, together with Cole, on a rocky promontory in serene contemplation of the scene before them: the gorge with its running stream, the gossamer Catskill mists shimmering in a palette of subtle colors, framed by foliage.
As Cole and Durand firmly believed, if the American landscape was a new Garden of Eden, then it was they, as artists, who kept the keys of entry.
