The city of Durango was founded in 1554 by the Spanish captain Ibarra, and served at once as a centre for numerous missionaries, whose efforts to convert the natives were so successful that under Philip III the Diocese of Guadalajara was divided by Paul V, and Durango was raised to episcopal rank.
Durango was made an archdiocese by Leo XIII (23 June, 1891), and now includes all the State of Durango and part of Zacatecas, with Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa for suffragans.
In 1900 the population of the State of Durango was 307,274, that of the city 31,092.

The Durango Microfilming Project is a cooperative effort involving the Archdiocese of Durango, Mexico, the Universidad Juarez del Estado de Durango, the Instituto de Investigaciones Históricos de UJED, the Archivo Histórico del Estado de Durango and The Rio Grande Historical Collections at New Mexico State University.
The purpose of the project is to microfilm the contents of the Historical Archives of the Archdiocese of Durango and important portions of the Historical Archive of the State of Durango.

The lack of urban sprawl on this route and everywhere in Mexico seems almost incomprehensible to an American.
Approaching Durango, if my ass was not so sore from the bumpy road, I could have stopped and taken a picture of the mountain scenery 200 km outside of the city that would have looked strikingly similar to a picture at kilometer marker 10 only a few minutes outside the city.
I´ll return to Durango and head southeast towards the city of Zacatecas, skipping the western pacific beach cities of Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta and the upcoming festival in Mazatlan in favor of the colonial city of Zacatecas and a later stop on the western pacific in Acapulco.
