Bond duration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Duration is useful as a measure of the sensitivity of a bond's price to interest rate movements.
Duration is always less than the life (maturity) of a bond, with the exception of zero-coupon bonds, where by definition the duration equals the life of the bond.
Specifically, duration can be formulated as the first derivative of the price function of the bond with respect to the interest rate in question, and the convexity as the second derivative.

Duration   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Duration is a measure of the average (cash-weighted) term-to-maturity of a bond.
Macaulay duration is useful in immunization, where a portfolio of bonds is constructed to fund a known liability.
Modified duration is an extension of Macaulay duration and is a useful measure of the sensitivity of a bond's price (the present value of it's cash flows) to interest rate movements.

 Invest FAQ:Bonds:Duration Measure
The duration measure for bonds is a invention that allows bonds of different maturities and coupon rates to be compared directly.
Duration is a weighted average of the times that interest payments and the final return of principal are received.
Duration gives one an immediate rule of thumb -- the percentage change in the price of a bond is the duration multiplied by the change in interest rates.

Define Duration   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
For fixed-coupon bonds, duration can be intuitively defined as the average maturity of all bond payments, where each payment is weighted by its value.
Using a lever analogy, duration is measured by the distance from the fulcrum, which is about one-and-a-half year.
We observe that duration is increasing with maturity: the duration of a 5-year note is 4.0 years, and that of a 30-year bond is 11.3 years.

U.S. Copyright Office - Information Circular
The old system of computing the duration of protection was carried over into the 1976 statute with one major change: the length of the second term is increased to 67 years.
Thus, the maximum total term of copyright protection for works already protected by federal statute is increased from 56 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 28 years) to 95 years (a first term of 28 years plus a renewal term of 67 years).
The duration of copyright in these works will generally be computed in the same way as for new works: the life-plus-70 or 95/120-year terms will apply to them as well.

Duration-the method used to estimate both of these issues-can also be used to value your credit union's loan and certificate portfolios.
Macaulay's duration model is a way to estimate the weighted average time until principal and interest are received.

Locke ECHU BOOK II Chapter XV Ideas of Duration and Expansion, considered together
For duration and space being in themselves uniform and boundless, the order and position of things, without such known settled points, would be lost in them; and all things would lie jumbled in an incurable confusion.
Such a small part in duration may be called a moment, and is the time of one idea in our minds, in the train of their ordinary succession there.
Duration, and time which is a part of it, is the idea we have ofperishing distance, of which no two parts exist together, but follow each other in succession; an expansion is the idea of lasting distance, all whose parts exist together, and are not capable of succession.

The lexical representation for duration is the [ISO 8601] extended format PnYn MnDTnH nMnS, where nY represents the number of years, nM the number of months, nD the number of days, 'T' is the date/time separator, nH the number of hours, nM the number of minutes and nS the number of seconds.
Timezones are durations with (integer-valued) hour and minute properties (with the hour magnitude limited to at most 14, and the minute magnitude limited to at most 59, except that if the hour magnitude is 14, the minute value must be 0); they may be both positive or both negative.

However, it may be useful to present the time duration of the content in a MIME header to allow its simple determination without dealing with the actual content.
Formally: duration := "Content-Duration" ":" 1*10DIGIT Note that practically (though highly unlikely in MIME media), the upper bound on the numerical value of the time duration is (2^^31 -1) or 2147483647.
Though there are several ways to present this duration to the recipient (e.g., with the inbox headers, when audio attachment opened), the actual use of this field on reception is a local implementation issue.
