		Later, in 1946, the Minister of Education declared the ML Sultan Technical College an approved institution for higher education in terms of the Higher Education Act (No. 30 of 1923) and, in 1953, the City of Council of Durban donated six acres of land at Currie's Fountain Centenary Road.
		The purpose of the new technikons was to provide education at university level for students seeking career training in the technologies, commerce and the arts.
		As a result of the policy of "self-help" in the Indian community, together with donations and grants from various sources, including the State and the Durban City Council, the first sod was turned by Advocate Christopher in July 1954.

	The Hindu : Kerala / Kochi News : Foreign university keen on tie-up with CUSAT
		Ambition of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) to go global has received a major boost with the Durban Institute of Technology (DIT), South Africa, showing keen interest in a tie-up with the State's best-known technology institution.
		Darren Lortan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and Manoj Malanjit, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance), of the Durban Institute of Technology and the Vice-Chancellor of CUSAT, P.K. Abdul Azis, Registrar, A. Ramachandran, and Dean, Faculty of Engineering, K. Paulose Jacob, participated in the discussions, said a press release from CUSAT.
		The signals that emerged out of a round of discussions between officials of both the institutions here on Tuesday were that they would work closely in some of the newly emerging areas in engineering and Internet technology.

	eThekwini Online - LAUNCH OF CIFAL TRAINING PROGRAM

		It is the first university of technology in a post-apartheid South Africa, resulting from a merge between Technikon Natal and ML Sultan Technikon.
		The Durban Institute of Technology comprises seven campuses and some twenty thousand students.
