Durham is divided into seven district councils for local government: Chester-le-Street; Derwentside, which includes the town of Consett; Durham, which centres on the city of Durham; Easington, which includes all the coastal parts of the county; Sedgefield; Teesdale, which includes the county's southwestern parts; and Wear Valley, which includes the county's central and northwestern parts.
County Durham is bordered on the north by Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, on the east by the North Sea and Cleveland, on the south by North Yorkshire, and on the west by Cumbria.
It is bounded by the Borders Region of Scotland to the north, the North Sea to the east, the counties of Durham and Tyne and Wear to the south, and the county of Cumbria to the west.

Durham police are set to unveil the force’s new Honda ‘PoliceBlade’ this weekend at the annual Bikewise motorcycle road safety event (Sunday 8 August, 10.00am – 5.00pm) at the county’s police headquarters.
The Bikewise event is celebrating its 10th anniversary and is viewed by Durham police as an ideal way to interact with local riders and motorcycle clubs to promote safer riding and to help reduce casualties on the roads of Co. Durham.
The Durham force has a dedicated motorcycle unit with nine officers and, in addition to the new ‘PoliceBlade’, the two-wheeled fleet is made up of Honda ST1100 and ST1300 machines.

In 1995, a mixed group of individuals met at Durham Police Headquarters with one aim in mind, to preserve the history of the Police Forces in the North East of England.
Eventually, a corporate decision was made by Durham Constabulary, who approached our Society and asked us to take on the task of the inventory of all the historical property, including documents, photographs, accoutrements etc. and eventually arrange a display in the foyer of the Police HQ.
The task was taken on board by six of our members and it was decided that the first display would cover the early history of Durham County Constabulary from 1840 to 1902, the Victorian era of the Force.

Durham Constabulary has called on the government to develop a new detector to test for drugs like cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine.
The call follows the release of figures from the force which showed drugs were found in more than half of drivers killed on County Durham's roads in 2002.
Durham Constabulary's head of traffic, Superintendent Barry Peart, says the government should introduce an all-encompassing testing device to help tackle what he described as "the massive problem of drug-driving".
