The Durham Township Historical Society - History of The Durham Boat
Robert Durham was stipulated to be a boat builder by trade in certain papers left by B.F. Fackenthall Esq., a native of Durham who indicated that he was told by his grandfather that Robert Durham was the first builder of a Durham boat in Durham.
Durham boats were "confiscated" by George Washington and used to carry his army across the Delaware River at a spot now known as Washington’s Crossing, PA in order for his troops to surprise the Hessians at Trenton on Christmas Day, 1776.
The Durham boat style came into disservice with the advent of canals where yet a different type of construction and style was used to carry freight.

Durham obtained the sandstone, dressed it off, lettered them, and those moss-grown stones are still standing, being probably the first tombstones erected in the county.

About Cooks Creek Watershed - Cooks Creek Watershed Association - Springfield Township, Durham Township, Bucks County, ...
Several recent studies conducted by the Durham Township Environmental Advisory Council (DTEAC) have indicated that the biological communities within Cooks Creek Watershed are sensitive to changes in water quality and quantity.
Water usage in the watershed is mostly residential, with a small water authority in Springfield Township that obtains its water from the springs that abound along the limestone/granite interface that surrounds the watershed.
The fragile nature of the limestone aquifer and the increase in development pressure in surrounding townships is the main reason the DTEAC was compelled to initiate the Cooks Creek Watershed Protection Plan (CCWPP).
