Durham is the only British university apart from Oxford, Cambridge and London to operate a collegiate structure in that all the colleges at Durham are "listed bodies" under the Education Reform Act, 1988, "recognised by the UK authorities as being able to offer courses leading to a degree of a recognised body".

It is one of a small percentage of fire departments throughout the country jointly funded by a municipality and major state university.
On April 1, 1927, thirteen civil-minded members of the community "recognizing the necessity for a properly drilled fire department for the University and Town hereby agree to become members of such a department", that an organized fire department was born in Durham.
In 1989 the administrative attachment of the fire department was transferred from the University of New Hampshire to the Town of Durham.

The track was originally fl cinder but in the last years of its life as a cinder track, Durham University AC did not use it as they considered it too dangerous as it was either often badly rutted when dry or flooded.
It was thought to have 6 lanes all round but possibly more on the home straight.
