It is usually only in late summer, when their populations are at their peak and wasps are attracted to plants with ripening fruit or aphid honeydew deposits on the leaves that most conflicts arise between humans and yellowjackets.
When the wasps have had their fill and instinctively fly upwards toward the light at the end of the funnel, they are trapped in an enclosed chamber above.
La ter in the summer, when wasps need less protein because they aren't rearing their young, sweet baits such as jam, honey or rotting fruit are often more attractive.

In an exciting game Durham took the lead after a Fatfield attack broke down the Wasps ran the length of a rather large pitch to sting Fatfield.
It was end to end stuff and it wasnt long before Fatfield got back on level terms with the wasps with a great goal from Liddell following hard work from Reay and Cook upfront.
Wasps took the lead with an excellent shot with time running out.

British Beekeepers' Association Support Boards :: View topic - Do beehives attract wasps to nest nearby?
at the commencement of a wasps nest the prime food source is usually met by foraging for aphids etc., the adult wasps exist on a sugary diet which is largely met by the wasp grubs excreta, sounds revolting but as the adult feeds carrion to the grub, it gets its reward from the rear end.
The wasps do though try and get into the hive as early as in June and even though I get annoyed at them it's fasinating watching them plan their move ie wait for a gap in bee activity and then zoom, in they go like a flash.
A few minutes later the wasp fly out, although they seem to be empty handed maybe they just fill their bellys or perhaps the guard bees do get to them and chase them out.

Worthington Durham County CIU Summer League: The promotion race from the Second Division hotted up with Crowtrees moving to the top of the table but only holding a one point advantage over Meadowfield, two points on Spennymoor B and three points on Stanley Central, whilst the fifth placed, Wingate cannot be written off.
DURHAM'S lightweight attack struggled to capitalise on Nicky Peng's first-day century and they were left in a vulnerable position by Mark Wallace's unbeaten 94.
Durham League: Nevilles Cross and Newton Hall, who have been in a promotion spot from the Second Division both slipped up badly and threw their move up into jeopardy when they both lost.

This area could once be reached from the Elvet side of the river by a ford which crossed the river from Green Lane near the Race course.
Old Durham near Gilesgate had long been suggested as the site of a Roman settlement and this theory seemed to be reinforced during a hot dry Summer in the last century when the remains of old bridge piers were exposed in the River Wear at Old Durham and further north at KEPIER.
Excavations at Old Durham suggest that the site was occupied from the second century to the fourth century A.D. In much later years Old Durham became the site of a seventeenth century mansion belonging to the Heath family.
