The dusky is a subspecies of Canada goose that breeds only in the Copper River Delta area on the south-central coast of Alaska and on islands in the Prince William Sound and Gulf of Alaska.
Ratios of duskies marked with colored neckbands to unmarked duskies are determined from samples of geese observed during two resighting periods.
Duskies were at their lowest known numbers in the mid-1950s, when only about 5,000 were counted on the wintering grounds.

Dusky Sound is a fjord on the south west corner of New Zealand, in Fiordland National Park.
The upper reaches of the sound are steep-sided, and the high precipitation of the region leads to hundreds of waterfalls cascading into the sound during the rainy season.
Dusky Sound was first sighted by European explorers when Captain Cook noted the opening to the sound during his first voyage to New Zealand on February 13, 1770.

Dusky Sound was named by Captain James Cook on his first voyage to New Zealand in 1770.
The Ma¯ori name for the sound is Tamatea after the legendary explorer who travelled the full length of the North and South Islands in his waka/canoe, the Takitimu.
They were Nga¯ti Mamoe iwi who lived in Dusky Sound and other remote fiords as fugitives of northern tribal battles and formed the basis for romantic and exaggerated legends of a “lost tribe”.

The Dusky Track is quite simply one of the most amazing walks in the world It's an 84 km track straight through the heart of Fiordlands National Park.
The track isY-shaped with trailheads at Lake Hauroko to the south, Dusky Sound to the west, and Lake Manapouri to the north.

The Diamond Princess arrived at Milford Sound a little before the morning sun…..but the sun did shine…..a rare occurrence in a place that receives over 9 meters (more than 30 feet of rain each year), so we are very lucky.

I was equally gutted to learn on catching up that the young bucks "short-cut" across the sea-grass covered flats, which I’d duly followed via their muddy footprints, gave Dusky Sound yet another shot at afflicting us with nipplus erectus, with a second deep fording to complete.
Luckily, having learnt the lesson that one of the Dusky’s hobbies is to collect pack covers (as well as stamps, business cards, and tramper carcasses), had tied the drawcord to my chest strap.
