Radde’s Warbler is the slightly larger and stockier of the two, with a large-headed appearance and a longer tail.
Dusky Warblers are slightly smaller than Radde’s, with a flatter head and a shorter tail, generally recalling a Willow Warbler in shape and size.
Radde’s Warblers legs are usually dull orange and heavy, with obvious joints and feet, compared to Dusky Warbler’s which vary between dark pink and mid-brown, and are unremarkable in size.

 Birds - Yellow Warbler
Because both birds are so conspicuously yellow, no doubt this warbler is quite generally confused with the goldfinch; but their distinctions are clear enough to any but the most superficial glance.
In the first place, the yellow warbler is a smaller bird than the goldfinch; it has neither fl crown, wings, nor tail, and it does have reddish-brown streaks on its breast that are sufficiently obsolete to make the coloring of that part look simply dull at a little distance.
No doubt, the particularly mild, sweet amiability of the yellow warbler is responsible for the persistent visitations of the cowbird, from which it is a conspicuous sufferer.

 Dusky Warbler
Today I drove down to Santa Cruz hoping to see the Dusky Warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus) which was apparently first found on Tuesday by Steve Gerow, then seen again yesterday morning by Rick Fournier who alerted Don Roberson who saw the bird about mid-day and confirmed the identification.
The face was relatively pale with a dusky border to the ear coverts, and dull streaking inside this border.
Although identification of warblers in this genus is notoriously difficult, this particular case was rather straightforward.

We thought a Dusky in June may be a bit fanciful, but the description was compelling, so a second trip was considered worthwhile.
We decided to play a snatch of song - we didn't think there would be many breeding Duskies in the area to disturb them - and sure enough we got a response.
Just done a quick check on the last 5 years, and aside from this winter's Duskys, the best over wintering record in recent years was one at Kessingland which remained until Jan 6th 2003.

This was used to generate yet another pointless statistic, in the hopes of elucidating whether "good" years were, relatively speaking, better for common or less common birds.
Some of the less regular vagrants, like Gray Catbird, Black-throated Green Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, and Lark Bunting, were far more numerous this year than usual, some with more reports this fall than the previous four combined.
Chestnut-sided Warblers and Tennessee Warblers were everywhere, and the two Mourning Warblers in this area were joined by another in Monterey County and two on the Farallones.
