Topic: Dust (His Dark Materials)

His Dark Materials - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His Dark Materials is a trilogy of novels by the fantasy fiction author Philip Pullman, comprising Northern Lights (released as The Golden Compass in North America and published in 1995), The Subtle Knife (published in 1997) and The Amber Spyglass (published in 2000).
Dust is less attracted to the innocence of children, and this gives rise to grisly experiments being carried out by Church-controlled scientists on kidnapped children in the icy wastelands of the far North.
A film adaptation, titled His Dark Materials: Northern Lights, is to be released in December 2007 by New Line Cinema, the company behind the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

Commentaries - Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials: an attack against Christianity or a confirmation of human worth?
The ‘metaphysical tragedy trilogy’, His Dark Materials, consisting of Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass, is of particular interest to me because of Phillip Pullman’s intriguing allegorical writing.
At the beginning of His Dark Materials, Lyra is immature and irresponsible, and being ‘Lyra of Jordan’ was all that was important to her.
I dare say he feels quite at home in here.’ This is one of the most important statements in His Dark Materials and is a climax in the trilogy; we finally see that there is some goodness in Coulter’s heart after her portrayal as such a cold-hearted person.

His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
His Dark Materials was published as a trilogy, in three separate volumes, but it really is only a single (though many faceted) story.
The mysterious Dust is one of the mysteries to be plumbed in these volumes: tied together are also questions of good and evil, life and afterlife, purpose and duty.
His Dark Materials is richly populated: important adult figures include Lord Asriel, Mrs.Coulter (a villain with just enough good (and maternal instincts) to confound all expectations -- as Lord Asriel says: "Whatever else she's done, she's never failed to surprise me"), and Dr. Mary Malone (a one-time nun and now a physicist from Will's world).

In “His Dark Materials,” the Church is run by a cabal of celibate men who are obsessed with sin and its eradication.
The Church considers Dust to be the “physical evidence for original sin.” Lyra’s father, a Byronic figure named Lord Asriel, defies Church prohibitions by mounting an expedition to the Arctic Circle, where he learns more about Dust by observing another universe, which can be glimpsed through the northern lights.
Dust is, as another character puts it, “a name for what happens when matter begins to understand itself.” You could say that, for Pullman, stories are the elementary particles of meaning, without which we’d be less than fully human.

Prior to the His Dark Materials trilogy, Pullman wrote a trilogy of historical mysteries set in Victorian England and some humorous novels, but nothing as ambitious as the fantasy trilogy.

 SparkNotes: His Dark Materials: Context
Though a major theme of the His Dark Materials trilogy is the treachery of organized religion, Pullman did not feel oppressed by the Anglican Church in his youth and his grandfather did not practice the kind of religious fundamentalism under attack in the books.
The title of Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials, comes from a phrase in Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, which retells the biblical story of Adam and Eve and their fall into sin.
Pullman published The Golden Compass, the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, in 1995, after he had already enjoyed some success with his Sally Lockhart novels and a number of books for younger children.

His Dark Materials is a follow-up to Paradise Lost that owes less to Milton than to Prometheus Unbound as Shelley might have written it for sophisticated kids.
Evil is represented by a dim, dying God and by tyrannical priests who torture witches, murder innocents, mutilate children and their sexual organs, and suppress every discovery they can; freedom and good by the brave new Lucifer, Lord Asriel, and his daughter, Lyra.
With Lyra revealed as the new Eve, another Fall in prospect, and much talk of a life- enhancing “dust” that those baleful Catholics and their snake daemons want to destroy, I increasingly felt that Pullman the would-be Shelley or Blake was actually Pullman the paranoid purveyor of muddled mumbo jumbo.

In his "worlds," there are computers that talk to elementary particles fashioned of the dark materials, flesh-eating "Cliff-Ghasts," flights of beautiful witches many thousands of years old, myriads of angels, talking ten-foot-tall armored bears, wheeled creatures — "mulefas" —; with elephant-like trunks, "gyptians," "Specters," Africans, and Tartars.
Of course, all this material is so complex and sophisticated that, although young readers are its target audience, only a few extremely precocious and well-read youngsters are likely to appreciate it.

The "dust" is more like the way I percieve God to be (an omnipresent existence, that resides in everything, and that everything resides in).
Turning inside out, His Dark Materials could be seen as an enormous logical contradiction, proving the hypotheses "does God exist" false for one case of its existence, and therefore, assuming an infinite God, proving the existence of God false everywhere.
If, as the Archbishop states, Atheists will questions the grounds of their approach, I also think His Dark Materials tells the opposite to the religious: "Step by step, I am taking the universe to pieces, God is here somewhere, what is it?".

Sally Lockhart and her companions are how we imagine the heroes of His Dark Materials will grow up; uncompromising, gritty, not always that friendly, but real people, with compassion and understanding.
Much of the trilogy is concerned with the children's desire to understand these things, and in fact they reach a clearer understanding than the representatives of the church and academia, because Dust is something pure, innocent, something which enables the world to survive but which must, in turn, be protected.
The trilogy is prefaced by a quotation from Milton:
