William Farnum was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and made his debut on the stage as Lucius in Julius Caesar; his only other part in a Shakespeare play was as Banquo in Macbeth in 1928.
His brother Dustin Farnum was also an actor in films and he did become a star.
Dustin was only 55 when he died, but before then he had played in 40 films.

Farnum beat Fellows by only 55 seconds in the three heats of the race, and at the finish of the final lap was less than half a boat length ahead.
Farnum, in addition to the Nordlinger Cup, was awarded the Ray Thomas trophy as winner of first prize.

Dustin's first acting role was as Tiny Tim in a school play - "A Christmas Carol." He intended to pursue music as a career but he switched courses and attended the Pasadena Playhouse where he studied acting.
Dustin and Jon Voight were both nominated for an Academy Award for their roles in "Midnight Cowboy" but they split the votes between them and neither won.

His mother and father were, respectively, a singer and an actor, and he and his younger brother William Farnum were introduced to the theatre at an early age.
Soon thereafter, Cecil B. DeMille gave Farnum the leading role in the film version of one of Farnum's Broadway hits, "The Squaw Man." He followed this smash hit with a number of film versions of plays he had starred in on Broadway.
At the age of fifty-two, Farnum retired from films and, but for a few stage roles, lived quietly with his third wife, actress Winifred Kingston for three years, until his death in 1929 from kidney failure.

In this first version we find chunky, middle-aged William Farnum in the lead, playing opposite a similarly weathered-looking Kathlyn Williams as saloon gal Cherry Malotte.
Santschi is a most despicable villain, taking a well-earned beating in the movie's most famous sequence, a no-holds-barred fight with Farnum that created a sensation when the film was released and is still fairly rousing to watch.
