Topic: Dustin Hawthorne

  Vue Weekly : Articles
Talking to Hawthorne over the phone, though, he sounds more or less blasé when it comes to the world of Hot Hot Heat—however, he offers his assurances that he’s plenty proud of the new CD.
Hawthorne’s interest in the finer points of well-tailored pants, tasteful accessories (think scarves, hats and bracelets) and colour-co-ordinated ensembles is, of course, no surprise; like so many bands that get lumped into the new-new-wave category, Hot Hot Heat gets noticed for taking pride in their wardrobe.
Hawthorne wouldn’t mind having that sort of influence on his audience—though he makes sure to say that he’d hope to reach them as a musician first and a style icon second.

Although it’s been four years since The Cure last released an album of new music – the melancholy, meandering Bloodflowers, which is Grammy nominated – their style has been adopted by many new bands: Hot Hot Heat, The Rapture, and Cursive all pay tribute by imitating The Cure’s sound.
Hawthorne should shut his mouth and thank his lucky stars his band is being compared to The Cure at all – Smith and his cohorts will continue to live on as legends long after MTV2 drops Hot Hot Heat like, well… a hot potato.
Other bands, including, but not limited to, 311, Reel Big Fish, AFI, Alkaline Trio and The Get Up Kids, have paid homage to Smith and his legacy by covering his songs – most of which didn’t do The Cure an iota of justice.

The Guide -- Hot Hot Heat Warms Up to the Crowd
Finally, Hot Hot Heat bounced onto the stage, singer Steve Bays with his strikingly sweet smile and gigantic ginger afro, bassist Dustin Hawthorne aloof in a hat and faded t-shirt, guitarist Dante DeCaro with his dark Krusty the Clown hairstyle and drummer Paul Hawley looking slightly dazed.
Bays’ vocals were terse and spiky, and he manages to make playing the keyboard look hardcore, legs splayed, head thrown back, one hand clutching the microphone, the other banging almost haphazardly at the keys.
Still playing his shiny tan and white bass, Hawthorne hurled himself into the audience during “Bandages,” the first release from the band’s sophomore album, Make Up the Breakdown and final performance of the night.

Beginning as a noisy, synth-based combo in 1999, Victoria, British Colombia's Hot Hot Heat evolved into an aggressively catchy indie-rock band two years later, when keyboardist Steve Bays took on the vocal duties and guitarist Dante DeCaro joined their ranks.
The group's new lineup — which also featured founding members drummer Paul Hawley and bassist Dustin Hawthorne — brought a newfound sense of melody and witty wordplay to their music, which they debuted on their 2002 EP Knock Knock Knock.
The EP, along with tours with groups like the Walkmen and Dismemberment Plan, paved the way for the full-length Make Up the Breakdown, which arrived in the fall of that year.

Dante DeCaro plays on the album (though he quit immediately after), but he's been bottled up somehow, all the anarchy of his attack funnelled into more conventional dance-punk rhythms.
Even the band's excellent rhythm section -- Dustin Hawthorne on bass and Paul Hawley on drums -- seems to have been shunted into ordinariness.
The songs here are resolutely pop, almost bubblegum, and though they're sometimes buoyant, hyperkinetic, even fun, they have almost no depth or resonance to them.

The British Columbia band had just played to a sold-out crowd at Axis, and at the invitation of the Harvard Lampoon, they reconvened with groupies in tow at the humor mag’s castle immediately afterward.
As the night fell to purple haze and questionable dice rolls, Hawthorne laundry-listed other things he didn’t give a fuck about — how many records his band sell, what ’80s new-wave acts critics say his band rip, "other shit." Each tick mark dripped with old-guard indie elitism.
