Lamu is perhaps best known as one of the jewels on the budget traveler's "Hippie Trail," set into the proverbial crown along side the likes of Goa (India), Dahab (Egypt), Byron Bay (Australia) and Kathmandu (New Jersey).
So, for me, a sailing trip on a traditional wooden dhow seemed like the perfect contrast to three days of bouncing around Kenya's Masai Mara game reserve in a dusty Japanese minivan trying to spot wild animals hidden behind a ring of other dusty Japanese minivans.

Mail Tribune News - Trail takes a historic turn
She had her fill of dusty, lifeless museums and intended to capture the vibrant lives of those who traveled the trail some 150 years ago.
Gaustad, who was first attracted to the picturesque valley while flying overhead in a jetliner, says the Applegate Trail she found on the ground is every bit as rich in historic lore as the one she first read about as a child back in Minnesota.
Never mind she was roughly 1,800 miles away and lived more than a century after the trail was blazed by the Applegate brothers: The young girl never forgot the tales about the hardy folks who first traveled the historic pioneer trail in 1846.

Arizona - Grand Canyon National Park - the Bright Angel Trail
Start of the Trail: Much of the well used and often very dusty trail is along a side canyon so the views are more restricted than those on the other main route (the South Kaibab, which follows a ridge downwards) but the scenery is of course still breathtaking.
Livestock have priority on the trails they use so travellers on foot have to stop and let them pass, and since the mules walk in convoys of a dozen or more and can be slow moving as well as quite smelly, they can be rather a nuisance.
One of only two maintained hiking routes into the Grand Canyon from the south rim, the Bright Angel Trail begins near the main visitor center complex and follows the course of Garden Creek, reaching the Colorado after 8 miles and a descent of over 4,000 feet.

NORTHERN LINE NEWS - Summer 1999
We feel strongly that the Northern Rail Trail should not become a noisy, dusty, polluting racetrack for a few, but instead should be a park - a linear park - running through the beautiful New Hampshire countryside and available for all to enjoy: pedestrians, bicyclists, equestrians, and snowmobilers alike.
After considering a rising threat that the Northern and other NH rail trails would be open to motorized use, the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Northern Rail Trail in Grafton County (FNRT) voted at its May meeting to suspend its volunteer trail building efforts until further notice.
However, the rail trails are not the appropriate place, especially this trail that travels through towns and residential areas.

 Granite Peak
The most common approach to Granite Peak is from the West Rosebud trailhead, at the end of a long, dusty, washboarded road beginning near Fishtail, MT. A good trail leads uphill a few miles to Mystic Lake and its hydroelectric dam, a popular destination for fishermen.
From the east shore of the lake another trail leads steeply uphill to a notch at the northern end of the barren, rock-strewn plateau of Froze-to-Death Mountain.
Besides some talus-strewn class 3 and 4 climbing, Granite Peak is notorious for the brutal thunderstorms that lash its slopes with predictable monotony on summer afternoons.

Maranda soon acquired three automobiles for travel on the dusty trail.  According to the Transcona Jubilee History Committee, Maranda felt that a minimum of ten passengers was necessary before starting each “hazardous” journey across the wide-open prairie to Winnipeg, and refused to move his vehicle until ten passengers had filled all of the seats!
Hershman’s first trip apparently took him three days to complete, as the trail was in such bad shape he actually had to lay down logs on the ground in order to get the bus over the worst stretches.  The route eventually became part of the Grey Goose Bus Lines operation.
