At least the Dutch still have military forces helping out there, as one-by-one other national contingents slip away (the Hungarians being the latest such).
Dutch troops sent to Iraq get extra payments in two forms: 39 euros per day for what the article terms the "extra workload" - taxable - and 27 dollars (yes, US dollars) per day, untaxed, for expenses.
Putting the problem into stark relief is the fact alleged several times in the article that Dutch troops actually earn more extra money going on training to Germany or Norway than they do being sent to the rather hostile current environs of Iraq.

The Dutch army was well-known for saying that they didn't worry about war because they knew the Americans would do all the work.
Dutch frugal, penny-pinching capitalism was driven more by the Protestant theology of predestination, in which people long for a sign of election through being economically succesfull, then by imitation of entrepreneurial Jews.
The dutch mercenaries (huurlingen) are of course stuck in mainly the same situation as for instance the americans are.

Until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Belgian Army was prepared to have a Division or two committed to a short, intense war for Europe against the invading Soviet Army.
A army is there to defends it's citizens, not to keep on fighting while cilivians are getting slaughtered and all you can do is hold the land troops back.
On the ground the dutch batalion tried to delay the serbs but a light batalion against a whole heavy division is not really a match.
