The Korps Mariniers is the marine corps of the Netherlands, and is part of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The Corps was founded on 10 December 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War by the unofficial leader of the republic Johan de Witt and Admiral Michiel de Ruyter as the Regiment de Marine.
It was the fifth European Marine unit formed, being preceded by the Spanish Marines (1537), the Portuguese Marines (1610), the French Marines (1622) and the British Marines (1664).

The word Marine is derived from the Latin word mare, meaning "sea." The most significant exploits by such troops were probably during World War II, when fighting men of the United States Marine Corps were landed on island beaches throughout the Pacific theater of war.
The Marine motto is Semper fidelis, meaning "always faithful." The term leathernecks comes from the fl leather collars the Marines used to wear, probably to protect their necks from swords and cutlasses.
Although individual Marines continued to be enlisted for and to serve in the few U.S. armed vessels of the period (such as revenue cutters), no Corps organization again existed until 11 July 1798, when Congress re-created the Marine Corps as a military service.

The Korps Mariniers or Royal Netherlands Marine Corps may not be as well known as their British counterparts, The Royal Marines, but they are no less highly trained and capable of handling any situation anywhere across the globe.
During World War II, the Royal Dutch Marines together with their Dutch Army counterparts fought bravely to defend the river bridges of Rotterdam against the invading forces of the Third Reich between 10 and 15 May 1940.
When the surrender was declared and the Dutch soldiers came out of their positions, the German commander who was expecting a full battalion of men was stunned to see only a few Dutch Marines emerge in their fl uniforms.

Prior to Captain Force's appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as Director of Music in 1971, he was the Band Director of the Port Chester High School Band in Port Chester, New York.
