The orange-white-blue flag, however, continued to be flown as well and in later times formed the basis for the South African flag.

The national flag of the Orange Free State was adopted in 1856 & loosely resembled the design of the national flag of the United States of America.
The OFS national flag contained alternating horizontal orange & white stripes (3 orange & 4 white with the white stripes on the outside) with a version of the Dutch flag (used initially at Graaff-Reinet & Swellendam in 1795) featured in the canton.
The Orange Free State national flag was featured in the former long running national flag of South Africa (from 1927 - 1994) as the vertical middle flag in the center of the white bar of the old South African flag.

It looks like a red flag with fl letters, but according to Van der Laars the flag is red with white letters ("For the protestant Religion and the Liberty of England").
In Holland that was not the case as this 'Union flag' for some reason was depicted as fl on red.
It seems this flag was used by the fleet of King-Stadholder William III when he sailed from Hellevoetsluis (Holland) to Torbay (England) on 11 November 1688.

In fact, the Dutch flag is not banned from "most schools".
Not only flags, but also clothes of the Lonsdale brand, combat boots with white or red laces and bomberjacks can have discrimination or ragging behavior as a consequence according to the school board.
Many (of course not all) of the students who DO wear flags on their clothes or bags are nationalistic students, rightish students who in my opinion abuse our tri-color by linking it a bit to "one nation, one flag".

The Dutch have banned their flag, but I'm sure they'll be quite happy to wear the zunnar.

A bonus of this theory is that the yellow flag is also called "flambe" or "flamme" in old French, which links it very nicely to the oriflamme.
The late date for the use of fleur-de-lis in English to designate the flower makes me suspect that, here, the charge came first and the name was applied to the flower because of the formal resemblance.
