Chovot ha-Levavot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was written in Arabic in 1040 under the title Kitab al-Hidāya ilā Fara'id al-Qulūb, Book of Direction to the Duties of the Heart, sometimes titled as Guide to the Duties of the Heart, and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the years 1161-80 under the title Chovot ha-Levavot.
The Duties of the Heart is divided into ten sections termed "gates," corresponding to the ten fundamental principles which, according to Bahya's view, constitute man's spiritual life.
Bahya held that it is not sufficient to accept this belief without thinking, as the child does, or because the fathers have taught so, as do the blind believers in tradition, who have no opinion of their own and are led by others.

Bahya ibn Paquda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was the author of the first Jewish system of ethics, written in Arabic in 1040 under the title Al Hidayah ila Faraid al-Qulub, Guide to the Duties of the Heart, and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the years 1161-80 under the title Chovot ha-Levavot, Instruction in the Duties of the Heart.
Bahya says in the introduction to Duties of the Heart that he wished to fill a great need in Jewish literature; he felt that neither the rabbis of the Talmud nor subsequent rabbis adequately brought all the ethical teachings of Judaism into a coherent system.
Bahya felt that many Jews paid attention only to the outward observance of Jewish law, "the duties to be performed by the parts of the body" ("Hovot ha-evarim"), without regard to the inner ideas and sentiments that should be embodied in this way of life, "the duties of the heart" ("Hovot ha-lev").

The Duties of the Heart (Chovos Halevovos) is Rabbi Bachya ibn Pakuda's classic theological work on the Jewish principles of faith and man's inner relationship to himself and to God.
It is our duty to study the origins and birth of the human, the form and structure of his physical frame, how the various body parts are connected and function together, the purpose of each individual part and the need for it to take its present form.

 Heart attack explained
To perform its duties, the heart needs a generous supply of oxygen and nutrients, which it receives from the two coronary arteries and their branches.
A heart attack occurs when the artery or arteries that supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients are blocked.
The precursor to most heart attacks is a condition called coronary heart disease, which means the arteries are silted up with fatty deposits.

Xunzi [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Like Mencius, Xunzi believed that the heart should be the lord of the body, and using the heart to direct desires and decide on right and wrong accords with the Way.
The function of the heart is to regulate the sense faculties and parts of the body, so that though one may have desires, the heart only acts on those desires when it is right to do so.
Their hearts focus too much on just one aspect of the Way, so they are unable to see the big picture.

Aristotle (384-322 BCE): General Introduction [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The heart of Aristotle's logic is the syllogism, the classic example of which is as follows: All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore, Socrates is mortal.
For Aristotle, the heart is the common or central sense organ.
The list seems to be more a deduction from the formula than a statement of the facts on which the formula itself depends, and Aristotle accordingly finds language frequently inadequate to express the states of excess or defect which his theory involves (for example in dealing with the virtue of ambition).

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Benedict of Nursia
The saint's purpose was not to institute an order of clerics with clerical duties and offices, but an organization and a set of rules for the domestic life of such laymen as wished to live as fully as possible the type of life presented in the Gospel.
Within the four corners of the Rule everything is left to the discretion of the abbot, the abuse of whose authority is checked by religion (Rule, 2), by open debate with the community on all important matters, and with its representative elders in smaller concerns (ibid., 3).
The ability to exercise this form of prayer is fostered by that care of the "heart" on which the saint so often insists; and the heart is saved from the dissipation that would result from social intercourse by the habit of mind which sees in everyone Christ Himself.

They develop this world at the expense of their minds; the more the world is developed, the more their minds are wasted, until finally they consider the evil way of the world good, the crooked way straight.

He suggests that the commandment to give Teruma for the purpose of constructing the Tabernacle only applied to those who wished to give from the heart, as opposed to others who did not feel this type of internal motivation, and consequently they were not technically commanded to do so.
Therefore the requirement of involvement of the heart does not affect the nature and spirituality of the Mishkan; it is rather a reflection of the spiritual levels and fulfillments of those donating to it.
RaMBaM follows the lead of the Siphre and Ta’anit 2a, which maintain that the “service of the heart” referred to in the verse in question is prayer, a commandment where what one feels in one’s heart is more important than the physical action that is entailed in the performance of the Mitzva.

By no means a task for the faint of heart, wiring duties were correctly regarded as being fraught with danger.
