Duval County is a county located in the state of Texas.
Duval is named for Burr H. Duval, a soldier in the Texas Revolution who died in the Goliad Massacre.
In the county, the population is spread out with 29.50% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Western Duval County is characterized by deep soils with loamy surface layers and loamy or clayey subsoils, and loamy soils with indurated caliche at shallow to moderate depths.
Duval County's climate has likely remained unchanged for centuries, but beginning in the late nineteenth century cattle ranching, which was the county's main industry, and farming have had significant effects on the county's vegetation and water supply.
Duval County had 20,667 cattle, excluding milk cows, in 1920; in 1940 the total was 49,025, and in the mid-1950s the county was considered one of the state's leading beef producers.

He was a surveyor or deputy surveyor for the Nueces Land District for over forty years and was first elected County Surveyor in Duval County in 1876, a post he was elected to intermittently over the next twenty-five years.

The town was still far from genteel; in 1878 2,000 federal troops were stationed in San Diego to afford the citizens some protection from Mexican and Indian raiders, and in 1879, during a period of protracted drought, five men were shot dead in downtown San Diego as part of a dispute over a local waterhole.
At the time, more than sixty Duval County young people were pursuing their studies elsewhere, and the college was intended to help keep some of these scholars at home.
On December 20, 1907, shortly after engineering a sweeping guarache triumph in the county elections, John Cleary, the county tax assessor and leader of the Duval County Democratic Party, was killed by a shotgun blast while sitting in a San Diego restaurant.
