Duxbury had lots of rocks and impressive scenery, but it was (and still is) a darned cold place in winter.
Duxbury is not a common place-name, there being only two other towns in the US with the same name.
Duxbury, Massachusetts, unquestionably provided the source for the Vermont name, but historians have told several different stories to explain the older use of the name.

The War of 1812 was unpopular in Vermont as it was in the rest of New England, and during the war extensive smuggling across the Canadian border was carried on.
Vermont was threatened by British invasion from Canada until U.S. troops, under Thomas Macdonough, won (1814) the battle on Lake Champlain.
Beginning in the 1820s political and social life in Vermont was considerably affected by the activities of those opposed to Freemasonry, and in the presidential election of 1832 Vermont was the only state carried by William Wirt, candidate of the Anti-Masonic party.

 History of Duxbury Vermont
On June 7, 1763, the area now known as Duxbury, Vermont, was chartered in the name of King George III by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire.
In 1950 the population of Duxbury hit a low of 489, and as late as 1970 our population was still less than it had been in 1920.
In addition to the various hamlets in Duxbury, there was also a geographical division of the town, the informal dividing line being about at the intersection of the northern end of the Turner Hill road with Route 100.

Footwear was made from skins, though a precious pair of shoes might have been brought from "home." One settler arrived in the Dowsville section of Duxbury in the late fall with no boots at all; to cut firewood in the snow, he tied wood chips to his feet.
Many abandoned hill farms in Duxbury were bought at this time by the Ward Lumber Company of Moretown, which converted the former fields to pine or spruce plantations, leaving only stone walls and lilac bushes to mark the former farms but providing badly-needed tax revenues and job opportunities.
Route 100 from South Duxbury to Duxbury Corner was converted from a dirt road to a paved state highway in 1961, making the trip "over the hill" to Waterbury possible even in mud season.
